Princess of Asturias
Princess of Asturias
In order to achieve a lasting peace with Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, Anne of France started negotiating the marriage of their only son and heir, John, Prince of Asturias, to Catherine of France, as well as the marriage of their daughter, Maria, to Louis XII. Catherine left the Paris for Spain late in 1498. The marriage took place in 1499. John died after only six months, on 4 October. Catherine was left pregnant, but on April 2, 1500 she gave birth to a stillborn son. The Dowager Princess of Asturias remarried to Ferdinand, duke of Calabria on 1505 after she has been excluded from the court after the death of her mother in law, Isabella I of Castile and she would provide her husband with two daughters Maria (1506) and Isabella (1510), her daugthter, Maria would marry John George of Montferrat making the future Marquis of Montferrat the descendants of the dowager queen of Asturias.
Ferdinand would not have a good relation with the wife of his own son that she would experience hardship after the time she was removed from the court and her husband died, Catherine of France would feel this and she would be friends with Catherine of Aragon before she actually married, Ferdinand would choose a marriage between his youngest daughter Catherine with Philibert II of Savoy and later Charles III of Savoy.
