Sunni Baathist in Syria and Shia Baathist in Iraq

The Syrian Baathist party was led by an Alawi (Shia offshoot sect) in Sunni majority Syria, while the Iraqi Baathist party was led by a Sunni in Shia majority Iraq. This has led to resentment among the majority in both countries, and could explain the sectarianism in their civil wars.

Lets say this was not the case. Both Iraq and Syria are Baathist, but the leader in Iraq is a Shia (and thus in line with the majority), while the leader in Syria is a Sunni (also in line with the majority).

How would this impact events in both Syria and Iraq?

Which faction of the Baath party are each of the leaders and does events like the Iran-Iraq war and the Gulf war go similar to otl.

There were a lot of Shias high up in the Iraqi Baath regime in the 1980s, perhaps one of them came into power after Saddam dies somehow?

Also, initially most Iraqi Baathists were Shia since Al-Rikabi himself was a Shia.
