Sunken Confederacy

"Proceed."

The final word in a chain of events that had been set into motion centuries ago. As the many columns of men and machines began to cross the border into the unsuspecting nation to the north, it showed just what humanity was willing to give, and take, in order to survive.

The War of Confederate Expansion was a conflict in the late 21st century spread across much of North America and the West African coast. Similar to the Lebensraum War in Europe the conflicts roots could be found dating back to the Millennial Sinking that occurred between 2035-2058. It is due to the War and its attachment to the Millennial Sinking that it must be given its own piece within this history.

The Millennial Sinking, or simply "the Sinking", as it will be called from this point on, can trace its cause back to the beginning of Industrialization in North America and Europe in the mid 1800s. Unknown to the general population at the time, the additional output of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere started a sort of "greenhouse" effect. The effect, while largely unnoticeable in the first century, the scientific community accepted the theory as true well before the middle of the century in 1859.

Its effects began to grow more and more troublesome as the industrial output increased and factories began switching over to oil as well as coal to fuel there increasing demand for energy. By the end of the War of Russian De-Evolution in the 1930's, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere had begun to grow into noticeable amounts, though still not enough to cause any major effects.

After yet another century still little had been done about the problem, and though some scientists warned of it, the world was in shock as the ice caps began to break apart and the sea levels began to rise. Coastal regions flooded, hundreds of thousands were washed away in the first few weeks. With little preparation or awareness, much of the coastal Confederate and United States was under water within within the first few months, Florida and Louisiana suffering greatly as New Orleans was one of the first cities to fall prey to the growing ocean.

Levies were attempted as the Sinking began, but as the waters continued to rise, attempts at salvaging or saving cities and even entire counties were useless. In 2039, a mere year after the onset, the nations of North America began mass evacuations of the coastal regions, with the entirety of the state of Florida's population having to be moved to the interior.

Moving closer to the main course of this section, by 2061 it was obvious the Confederacy could not sustain its population without the land it had lost to the rising waters. In a tense meeting between the President and the leaders of both parties in Congress, a tremendous military buildup was decided on with the intent to invade and occupy the American states of Kansas, New Mexico, and Arizona in order to settle the population that had been displaced by the Sinking. While other lands were also suggested, they were seen as unlikely to succeed before the United States reached a strong war time footing. Another topic in the meeting, one much more difficult to get agreement on but no less vital, was funding for research into what many in the CS scientific community thought would be a bomb capable of obliterating an entire city on its own. This "atomic bomb", as termed by then President William Stephens, would be the Confederacies ace in hole if the war effort happened to falter.

By 2066 the Confederacy was the strongest it had ever been compared to their northern neighbor, which due to the Sinking had been focusing heavily on internal affairs and allowed its military might to dwindle as it was forced to resettle millions of its citizens to the interior. The atomic bomb was still some ways from completion, but it was assured it would be done within the next year or so.

Though content to wait until the completion of the weapon, a surge in the sea levels had caused even greater casualties in what had been Houston, Texas. It had been thought that the waters had stopped rising. The fact that another rise had occurred, and that the city had fallen to the waves, left the Confederacy little choice. On June 19th, 2066, President Stephens gave the go ahead, uttering one word;

"Proceed".

So far, this looks interesting - plenty of information to set the scene, plenty left open for future elaboration.

Looking forward to the next installment.

ASB or not, I'll be following this. It's like that "Hitler's grandson in a victorious Nazi Germany declares war on America in the 60s" timeline that was up for about an hour a while back. Too cool for this site.
