Sulu, Pearl of the Orient
Laila Mekanai is the heiress of Sulu, and thus became the most eligible bride in Maritime South East Asia. She married Sultan Bolkiah of Brunei in a day in late 1400’s . As Queen of Brunei, she participated in the unsuccessful Jihad against Mayi to make Islam the predominant religion there and force the Royal family there to adopt Islam and abandon Buddhism.[1]
Soon after the Jihad was over, Bolkiah and Laila agreed to dissolve their marriage, because of Laila's own desire for divorce because the possible Personal Union of Sulu and Brunei was unpopular to both parties. They were divorced on 1500, their Children remained with Bolkiah and Laila Mekanai forbid any one of them succeeding the throne of Sulu and said that if she dies unmarried her cousins in the father side would inherit the Sulu Sultanate instead, in order to prevent a personal union between Sulu and Brunei.[2]
As soon as she arrived in Sulu, Laila Mekanai became engaged to Rajah Humabon of Sugbu[3], a few weeks after the divorce of her first marriage with Bolkiah and Rajah Humabon converted to Islam and became known as Abdul Mohammed, Laila Mekanai married the Ruler of Sugbu, Humabon now Abdul Mohammed. After her father died, her husband, Abdul Mohammed became the Sultan of Sulu as well.
