Sukarno killed in 1957

On 30 November 1957, an assassination attempt was made on Sukarno by way of a grenade attack while he was visiting a school function in Cikini, Central Jakarta. Six children were killed, but Sukarno did not suffer any serious wounds. The perpetrators were members of the Darul Islam group, under the order of its leader Sekarmadji Maridjan Kartosuwirjo.

Say the assassination is more successfully and kills Sukarno

Who would be his successor

Would Indonesia still annex West Papua and oppose the creation of Malaysia

It's still probably Suharto and it's guaranteed that they still annex West Papua. The big question will be whether they continue their relationship with the USSR, or move closer to the West as they did in OTL. My guess would be that, at least until the issue of West Papua is resolved, they continue to draw closer to the USSR and the PRC, since they, and the other Soviet Bloc nations, were the only ones willing to back Indonesia on their demand that West Papua had always been and should always be a part of Indonesia

Soeharto in 1957 was the Regional Military Commander in Central Java. His prominence is only limited at best to Central Java. Nowhere near a national figure.

The Vice Presidency was vacant at this stage. The presidency would go to Chairman of the People’s Representative Council (Equivalent to Speaker of the House) Sartono. Sartono would be a transitional figure until the real president could emerge.

The real successor would be Army Chief of Staff Abdul Haris Nasution. It was he who conceived of the idea of the Indonesian Army becoming more than just the “tool” of the government of the day.

Nasution would still go after West Papua. Unlike Soekarno, Nasution probably would not follow West Papua with Confrontation against Malaysia. It’s unlikely also that Nasution would drift too close to the communist bloc.

Nasution was a clean skin. He would’ve been an authoritarian if incorruptible president.
