Sucessful Bay of Pigs

My guesses. No Castro on Cuba. Cuba runned by a suprisingly leftist president or perhaps dictator. Their, rather then Canadas, healthcare system will be the ideal for the US left. Gambling may or may not be outlawed. It will be a democracy in early 1980's, either because it was all along or because the dictator leave power then.

The big if is the drug trade in the 80's. It sit at one possible rout.

I was wondering about drugs myself. If the Havanna godfathers returned after the fall of the communists Cuban might become a vice center like it was under Batista. With gambling and the like already established and with Cuban being so close to the US maybe we'd see a Columbia scenario when cocaine becomes big.

Could BoP have succeeded? It was my understanding that it was doomed from the start.

But if so: US props up a new government, ideally democratic, likely right-wing strongman. Worst case: Havana remains a wretched hive of scum and villainy...err rum and roulette. Cue next revolution. Cuba possibly faces the same fates as Central America. Best case: Cuba follows the Dominican Republic model and is a modest local tourist- and plantation-run republic.

I'm left wondering about two things:

1) How this would reflect on JFK's presidency, if he were to still get assassinated in this ATL. Because this was before the Cuban Missile Crisis, one of his defining moments, if not THE defining moment.

Probably depends on how it all turns out in the end, post-Invasion. If it turns out to be something like Iraq is today, it'd just give the more fuel to the anti-war movement, if not create it a tad bit earlier than in OTL. Specially once Vietnam came rolling in.

But if it turns out to be a really decent, if not great, democracy, this would probably be one of his greatest accomplishments, specially during the Cold War.

and...

2) How would the Soviet Union react?? In and around this time, new Communist countries were popping up like crab grass, granted not all of them were buddies of the Soviet Union, but they WERE willing to give Cuba nuclear missiles in the OTL, (granted AFTER Bay of Pigs) which makes me wonder how they'd react to seeing Cuba's Communist Leadership fall.

Not sure if this would create an anti-war movement since I don't see official US troops being directly involved if there is more revolutionary action. Probably look more like Cuba earlier in the century or Latin America in the '80 with the US periodically sending in the Marines or giving material support.

Would the Soviets do anything since the Cuban alliance was just starting at the time of Bay of Pigs? They might dislike losing an ally in the Americans but maybe diplomacy would smooth it over and make it a kind of American equivalent to Hungary in '56 with one superpower allowing another to do as it wished in their backyard.

No idea about JFK.

Going on the canceled Bay of pigs thread what would the effects have been of it being a sucess?

Eh? The Bay of Pigs WAS a complete success. The Cubans trained by the charismatic Che crushed the invasion attempt by the USA and drove the counter revolutionaries back into the sea thus humiliating the Americans and their young president. How much success do you need before you call a thing a success?
