Successful Santorium

Rick Perry enters the race in June. In July, both Perry and Michelle Bachman commit serious debate gaffes. In August, Rick Santorium wins the Ames straw poll. The national publicity allows him to build a national organization based on conservative Catholic and conservative Evangelical volunteers. In December, Newt Gingerich weakens Mitt Romney with ads talking about Bain Capital. That same month, Romney destroys Gingrich with ads focusing on extra marital affairs, ethics charges and the government shut down. Massive detections from Gingrich and some detections from Romney, Santorium wins a 37 percent victory in Iowa. scoring only in single digits Gingrich and Bachman withdraw. In February,Santorium wins ND, MN and the non binding primary in MO. w While hammering on how the presidents contraceptive plan violates religious freedom, he avoids in depth talk of his own views on birth control and he wins in MI. On Super Tuesday, he wins GA,OK,TN,VA, AS, WY and the big prize of OH. Before the end of March, he won primaries in AL,MS and LA and caucuses in KA and MO.In April, he only won his home state of PA but in May, he swept IN,NC,WV,NE,KY,AK and TX. In June, Santorium won MT and SD. After Romney seemed to express pro choice views on abortion, Santorium scored an upset victory in UT. No candidate won a majority of delegates. Santorium won on the second ballot after Gingrich gave him his endorsement. After Santorium named Gingrich his running mate, charges of deal dogged the campaign. In November, Obama wins 56 percent of the vote, Santorium 37 percent and Libertarian Ron Paul 5 percent. In the Electoral College, Obama wins his 2008 states plus GA,SC, WV, MO,SD,ND, MT,TX and AZ for 456 electoral votes.

Today I was freaked to hell and gone by my wife's cousin. He and his fiancee are visiting us en route to Uganda and when he heard that Santorum had pulled out he was sorry, because he thought that Saintorum (sorry, couldn't resist) was a clever guy who had some good ideas. My wife, a lifelong Democrat who could see the blood rushing to my face, diverted the conversation at that point before it got ugly.

Uganda? That's a little disturbing in and of itself - American evangelical groups have been deeply involved with the proposals by the Ugandan government to make homosexuality punishable by death.

Do you think your wife's cousin could be implicated in that? Not meaning to smear him or anything, just thought you guys might want to know.

the states in bold will definitely be red in 2008. especially GA, SC, and WV. McCain got over 55% of the vote in WV and with Santorum as the Republican I find it hard to believe SC and GA would move to the Obama Column (especially with Gingrich as the Veep)

I will say this. Rick Santorum had a good chance to beat Mitt in Michigan, but he lost.

If he had won in Michigan, he would have most certainly won in Ohio. Winning Ohio would have assured a Santorum win in Missssippi and Alabama. After winning those states, he would have continued momentum into Illinois.

I am convinced a Santorum win in Michigan would have thrown the whole GOP race into chaos.

Now suppose Santorum wins those states, he is practically the new frontrunner, and the calls for Romney to drop out would begin.

However such a scenario could also lead to the first GOP deadlocked convention since 1952.

I personally believe Obama would beat Santorum, but it would be a hard race because he has more of a genuine appeal to the average american than Millionaire Mitt does.

Wishing you well, his majesty,
The Scandinavian Emperor

In Georgia McCain beat Obama 52 percent to 46 percent and in South Carolina and Arizonia it was 53 percent to 44 percent. ITTL there would certainly be enough detections to Paul and Obama plus Republican no shows to change the result. I concede that Texas and West Virginia, where McCain got 55 percent is more difficult That would lower the electoral college total to 414.

I'm not contesting Arizona.

Moderate McCain doesn't have the same appeal to conservatives that Rick Santorum does, he would definitely have carried Georgia and South Carolina.

I doubt there were that many conservative stay at homes in 2008. s Santorium would not win that many independents. h He would drive away some conservative Republicans. I read that 16 percent of McCain voters were Hillary supporters. s Santorium is not getting thief votes.

But McCain had some appeal to moderate voters. I don't see that for Santorum.
