What would it take for reconstruction to have been successful after the American civil war. Success is here defined as:

1. The eradication of the political and economic power of the former confederate leadership, in Marxist terms the liquidation of the plantation owners as a class.

2. The integration of freemen into American society as full citizens (with practical the right to vote, not be murdered by mobs of white people etc).


3. The establishment of self government in the south, including democratic governments elected by the full population in every state.

4. This system isn't overthrown and replaced by Jim Crow.
