Successful Gunpowder Plot

Erm, you may need to Elaborate further my friend.

Well, they planted loads of barrels of gunpowder under the Palace of Westminster, planning to blow these up during the opening of Parliament, when the King and most of the country's other leaders would be present. After that, they hoped, England's Catholics would rise up and restore England to the true faith. I'm not sure how detailed their plans were for after that (e.g., who would be King, how much toleration the country's Protestants would have, that sort of thing), although in the end this didn't matter, because their plot was discovered after one of them wrote a letter to Lord Montague saying "Psst, your Lordship, don't tell anyone, but it might be a good idea not to attend Parliament on this date."

Basically, the POD here is that they don't get discovered, and manage to blow up the King and Parliament. What happens next? Does the hoped-for Catholic rising materialise? How successful is it? Who becomes King? What happens to the country's religious make-up? Etc.

I can see the Catholic rising materialize and, with aid from Scotland, France, and Spain, be successful. For the king part, it says on Wikipedia (not the best of sources, I know) that Princess Elizabeth was planned to be installed as ruler after the Catholic rising. For the religious makeup, I can see a Protestant in hiding getting to ITTL's Elizabeth II and convincing her to support freedom of religion. So really, despite having a shorter reign for James I and VI and a new Queen, not much else would change via religious makeup.

I see your Catholic Uprising and raise you this article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/civil_war_revolution/gunpowder_hutton_01.shtml

I'm afraid such a "catholic uprising" would draw the ire of more than half of the english population, Charles I included (if he isn't killed by the plot). In this timeline, Charles becomes king at the age of four, rather than twenty-four.
The difference here is that the trauma he'd receive from a successful gunpowder plot could turn him over to protestantism, perhaps even radical protestantism, unlike OTL.
Maybe, if a catholic uprising still happens, continues, and ends up causing a bit of anarchy, the protestants will end up supporting a more autocratic monarchy. But this can be affected by the issue of who is Charles' regent.
