Successful Gallipoli campaign?

What if the British Empire's attempted invasion of the Ottoman Empire in WWI had succeeded, and they had captured Istanbul? How would that have affected the war?

I'd have said you should have searched for it, but the search function being what it is...
Anyway, from what I've understood, the short answer is: can't happen. They could, however, possibly have captured Alexandretta if they had put the resources and manpower that went into Gallipolli into such an operation instead.

One'd have to alter a few things about it. Well, I say a few. Abdul Hadi Pasha will be along in a bit with some handy info on the period. There are a couple of TLs centred around this sort of idea, but LordInsane's right that the search function's a bit dodgy. Anaxagoras' Rule Britannia is the one that really leaps to mind. I fear I haven't yet got round to reading it yet, though!

Knock out the Turks which frees up Empire troops, and opens the straights meaning the Russian war effort gets more effective and prevents/delays food riots etc in major cities

Pretty much plus possibly opening up a Balkan front which puts even more pressure on the central Powers. Bulgaria would stay neutral or join the allies and Rumania might join the allies earlier. Greece would probably also get involved which would enabling opening supplies lines to the Serbs. Coupled with Bulgaria not flanking them this means they will probably survive for a good bit longer.

Furthermore the loss of the Ottomans would be a big moral factor for both sides, Virtually impossible to see anyone else joining the central powers and the more rational of them would start looking to make peace.
