Successful Burr Conspiracy

^For those who aren't aware. Burr basically leased out part of Texas from the Spanish government.

It seems to me that if he just used the Texas land, there would really be no need for an army so I will posit two scenarios:

1. Where the conspiracy is true and Burr and a few officers (supported by British navy in the Gulf?) break off the southwestern portion of the Louisiana Purchase (now south Middle America).

2. Burr drops the conspiracy idea and basically becomes a proto-Stephen F. Austin / Sam Houston (really the resemblance to their two stories is uncanny) setting up and organizing American migration to what is now Texas.

Have you read An Artist in Treason by Linklater?

His take is that Burr (the quintessential Easterner, of course) wanted to resurrect the "Spanish Conspiracy" idea from the 1780s, but none of the Westerners he allegedly recruited - including Wilkinson (who, after all, as senior general and governor of Louisiana Territory had control of roughly 3,000 troops) - would only have marched in support of an invasion of what was still New Spain and annex Texas and as much territory to the west (New Mexico) and southwest (northeastern Mexico) as possible into the United States.

That change of heart among the westerners was demonstrated by everyone from George Morgan to Andrew Jackson, who rather famously said "I would delight to see Mexico reduced, but I will die in the last ditch before I yield a foot to the Dons, or see the Union disunited."

Burr, after all, had no more than 80 men when he landed at Vicksburg; not exactly an army...

The 1806 war scare with Spain, which actually came within a few weeks of a real battle on the Sabine, is actually a pretty interesting potential point of departure; the 1806 "Burr Conspiracy" scare less so...

Best,

There is a short story I read named Empire by William Sanders in the book Alternate Generals III that kinda uses the Burr segway to put Napoleon in New Orleans in control of much of the Southeast and Louisiana with Andrew Jackson as his general in chief and Davy Crockett and Sam Houston as subordinates.

Wildly Implausible, but very, very, fun to read.

I am doubtful that Burr intended to break away the United States. He makes much more sense as part of the long American tradition of stealing other people's nations.
