Successful Adal conquest of Ethiopia

The Oromo become the next big challenge for the expanded Adal, and they won't give Adal an inch. Any civil disturbances can likely become fatal for Adal's power as the Oromo migrate in and take control of the countryside (they got as far as Harer OTL). More likely you'd see Adal collapse into regionally based successor states dominated by nationalities like the Afar, remaining Ogaden Somalis, and Oromo. The Amhara or Tigray likely reassemble a truncated Christian kingdom lacking vital territories like Shewa or Harer.

I am loving this thread, watched.

Just an Amateur's inferences.

Basically, the Adal would leave a lasting stamp of Islam on Ethiopia even if their regime was overthrown.

Also, future Ethiopian rulers would now have a legitimate claim on Somaliland .

The Ottoman influence down south would grow.

Trade between Ottoman Egypt and Ethiopia would increase substantially. Ottoman control over Red Sea increases.
This would maybe lead to earlier reconquest of East Africa from the Portuguese by Oman, financed by the Ottomans. This would also maybe become a challenge to the British ambitions in India later.

The Oromo would either convert to Islam or fight desperately against it.

Egypt would once again become the center of the Coptic world.

An Adalese conquest of Ethiopia might see something like the creation of an Islamic Ethiopia along the lines of the Kievan Rus where an Islamic/Somali elite gradually Ethiopianize as TTL's Ethiopia becomes much more closer to either Cairo or Istanbul, if not both.

How successful would you say Adal might be at attempting to stamp out Ethiopian Christianity?

They might be kinda successful closer to the centre of power (capital). But the more West and North will be harder if not rebellious to anything Adal does. I'd see the Church survive without too much harm.

So Ethiopia with todays border would have no less than 33% Ethiopian Christian Church.

This is possible, but difficult. Likely if they failed against Ahmed would go to the highlands and bleed adal dry. If they did conquer, Ethiopian nobles would convert and such to adapt to the new order, and a Somali Ethiopian ruling class would emerge. Islamization would occur slowly. Trace with the ottomans improves the economy and such. Maybe some raids against European forts, def much wealthier due to coastline and ottoman ally. The military might adopt some ottoman customs as well. Assuming the new empire consolidates, perhaps some capaigns in somaliland.

So what might the effects be on Ethiopian culture after a successful Adalese conquest?

Good question... it might be some mixture of Somali, Sudanese and Yemenite with the existing Ethiopian Culture. Todays Ethiopian Culture would exist plus some addition of their neighbours minus their alphabet for an Arabic one. No large scale assimiliation.

You think assimilation wouldn't be successful?

You just reminded me - what's the farthest extent to which an Islamic Ethiopia could expand?

Perhaps we see an Ethiopia that maintains a significant Habesha majority? Even then, wouldn't there potentially be significant Somali minorities?
The lines may end up blurred between Ethiopian and Somalis. While they would still clearly be distinct, assuming Islam remains dominant Ethiopia will likely adopt an Arabic script, Islamic banking Islamic attire, while Somalis retain Ethiopian court tradition and administration. One positive thing is less hatred between Ethiopians and Somalis.

If anything, wouldn't there be intensified conflict and hatred between Ethiopia and Somali when you consider the fact that Islam was forced upon the Christian Ethiopians?
