Successful 20 July Plot

The problem with the July 20 folks was that they had the hubris to believe they could keep Germany's gains after being notoriously depraved AND when they are on the retreat.

The time when that mentality could work to secure a peace/armistice is 1942 at the latest. Yet that's also the time when Hitler's reputation and power were at their zenith.

To the Allies, Hitler was simply an even nastier form of the extant and well-known Prussian ambition and ruthlessness.

Worse, on the retreat and probably having a fair bit of a civil war in the background (If you think the SS are going to buy a word about Himmler's demise, you got another thing coming)....

Yep, look at the differences between the Kreisau Circle and the Valkyrie Plotters. They may as well have been on the other side of the world for how different they were in perspective and expectations postwar and the prospects for peace without defeat.

Ironically, those who the Army and Abwher sneered at for being idealistic and naive were far more realistic about what truly needed to be done to save Germany and what it faced after the war thanks to its folly.

If the events between the bomb going of and Hitler talks in the phone telling the world he has survived goes as OTL then the plotters will not acomplish much before Goering and/or Himmler aprehend them and then Goering steps in as the successor he is named as. Then Luftwaffe will take to the skies again en masse and strike.

If there is chaos in Germany propper we might see German troops withdrawn from Norway and Denmark to restore order.

Since this is around the time of the breakout from Normandy we will see the armordivisions Germany had around Caen withdraw to the north instead of trying to seal the gap

Some of the most interesting potential with this PoD isn't in how it affects the occupation of Germany, but the other Axis/Occupied nations of Europe -- one example might be Bulgaria successfully surrendering to the British; another would be putting non-communist Poles in a somewhat stronger position.
