Suppose one took the Brown Bess land pattern musket design and got rid of 70% of its barrel and then gave it to a cavalry man.

With such a short barrel, the musket ball would leave the barrel before the gases finished expanding. This would considerably impact muzzle velocity.

Would a pistol be better than this carbine? Note that real cavalry carbines are longer barreled, but this truncated one would still be too unwieldy to use as a pistol.
