before the beatles became professional artist. stu sutcliffe was a member suppose stusutcliffe never left or the beatles and he did not die prematurity. How would the beatles sound with paul, john, ringo, george and stu? if anyone could write up a timeline of this i would be impress.

He died from a brain aneurysm presumed to have been caused by a fight after a performance in Liverpool a year earlier in January 1961. Could be a POD, but he would still have to decide to stay in the band.

They would have sucked, because Stu couldn't play the bass to save his life (pun intended). He used to stand with his back to the audience so no one could see that he couldn't play.

If Stu stays in the Beatles - through whatever means - there's likely to be a similar situation to what happened with Pete Best.

Only thing is, I'm not sure how keen John would be on cutting Stu loose.. maybe he suggests a creative solution: "What if we get an organ for him to play?"

The implications for the Beatles sound would be HUGE.

Away from the Beatles, if Stu decides to stick to his art career in England as the other Beatles go to Hamburg, then when they come back Stu could end up designing concert posters, and eventually album covers for the Beatles.

If you're thinking along the lines of Storm Thorgerson (Pink Floyd's album-cover guru), you get the idea.

If Sutclife couldn't play guitar, do you know what he could play? (Not a fan, so I don't.) It occurs to me they might add another guitar and switch him.

It seems he might end up doing art for other covers, too.

A big problem with keeping Sutcliff in the group, leaving aside for the moment his demise, is that my impression is that his heart never really was in music. I could be wrong, but I think Sutcliff saw himself as an artist, and his membership in the group was based on his friendship with John Lennon rather than any nascent musical ambitions. Therefore, I think he was always likely to depart the group at some point to pursue his actual artistic interests. Had he lived, he'd stay an artist, but an artist who happened to be close friends with John Lennon, which would probably be good for his career in 1964 or so, assuming Beatlemania hits on schedule. He probably designs an album cover or two, but not until the band moves into a period in which it wants its covers to be artistic statements, ie, late 1965-1966.

I have read some on Pete Best, the tv tropes articles give this guy an interesting light on...

was he good? could he have remained in too? And what would that give to the Beatles?

The Beatles were a very tight act - I don't think they would have got as far if they had to carry a weaker musician. Of course people do improve. Stu could definitely play something.

So a slightly less popular Beatles putter along in the shadow of, I dunno, The Animals. I've often said Alan Price was the Secret King of the 1960's. The Animals are the major band of the 60's, and The Beatles are doing well but aren't top dogs.

Under Stu's influence the Beatles spend a lot of time in New York at Andy Warhol's Factory, and for much of the late 60's they rarely visit the UK.

After his debut in Easy Rider and in the Stu-directed sequel, John Lennon put more energy into his acting than into The Beatles. Paul joined Crosby, McCartney, Nash &Young while the band was on hiatus and George & Ringo made several LPs with George Clinton and MC5. George Harrison later joined Fairport Convention - a band he still occasionally plays for.

The Beatles continued to release an LP every year throughout the 60s and 70s although they varied in quality and some were essentially solo projects by various members.

In 1976 John returned to the UK and with Malcolm McClaren set up Apple Records, a do-it-yourself recording studio and record label that was used by The Damned, The Sex Pistols, The Buzzcocks and Lennon's own band Three Idiots. It was during that time that he met and married Julie Burchill, who is blamed by many fans for splitting up The Beatles.

Stu spent some time as the "dancer" for the Happy Mondays and ran a club in Manchester. His paintings are very expensive. Ringo lives on his compound in Montana and does not welcome visitors. He writes military Sci Fi for Baen books. Paul continues to tour with Neil Young. George Harrison is a well-respected folk and rock performer who plays at Fairport Convention's annual Cropredy Festival but is no longer a member of that band.

The Beatles still produce a record every couple of years without John, and they were the headline act on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival last year.

I'm liking the idea of both of them staying in, & The Beatles being eclipsed...:cool: Have The Animals lead the British Invasion?

Not so sure about Crosby, McCartney, Nash, & Young...

Yeah, I can't see Paul McCartney joining David Crosby in a band.

McCartney hooking up with Graham Nash, however.. THAT might work.

If The Beatles split sometime between September 1966 (after the final USA tour) and early 1968 then it could be a possibility - if Paul wants to cast his net out for a new songwriting partner, that is...
