Stronger KM Mediterranean Division, 1912

In Nov. 1912 the German Mediterranean Division consisted of one battlecruiser (SMS Goeben) and one light cruiser (SMS Breslau).

Let's give this force a greater punch, starting in late 1913. The mission in ATL is to help the Austro-Hungarian k.u.k. Kriegsmarine match the French fleet in the Mediterranean (war with Italy is not planned for). However we still need sufficient heavy units at home to keep the RN's Grand Fleet at Scapa.

The k.u.k. surface fleet has four dreadnoughts and about ten pre-dreadnoughts, plus cruisers and torpedo boats. I suggest that the four Nassau-class dreadnoughts be sent, as they're the least capable of Germany's dreadnought ships, while still capable of giving a good fight to the French. What else do we send?

The problem is that Malta is just as good a block for forces into the Med (let alone Italy) as GB/Scarpa Flow is to the Atlantic.

Not matter what you move the RN probably covers it and you end up stuck in a different port..... (remember that GB/RN needs to keep the main trade routes to India through the Med so it will be taken as a threat)

The problem with sending lots more ships -- especially if you're assuming Italy won't be honoring its treaty committments -- is that there's precious few places to keep them in the meanwhile. When Adm. Souchon got Goeben some yard time at Pola, it made the Austro-Hungarian fleet upset, because there was precious little room to service their fleet, let alone German ships...

Here is the list of ships that could be sent [at maximum]:
4 Nassau class dreadnoughts
10 pre-dreadnoughts [more if dreadnoughts weren't sent]
1 Moltke class battlecruiser and Von Der Tann or Blucher
Scharnhorst, Roon or older class armoured cruisers
Gazelle, Konigsberg or Bremen class light cruisers
Torpedo boats and destroyers of the 1898, 1906 and 1911 types
Reinforcements from colonial stations
Assorted gunboats, sloops and auxillary vessels
Passenger liners in the Mediterranean
