Strength and population of a moderately successful modern byzantine empire?

What would be the strength and population of a moderately successful modern byzantine empire? "Moderately" means no Wanks, but also no decline like the ottoman empire. It would have about those national borders without south italy.

In best case it could be local power. Perhaps even could get Libya but it has not big role on Scramble of Africa. With good luck surviving Byzantine might has too couple vassal states in Caucasus, Balkans or Syria/Levant.

In worst case that size of Byzantine would be like Persia on end of 19th century. Backward nation which is effectively under booth of another nation.

Define what you mean by modern please? Lasting till 1700, 1800, 1900, or today?

In worst case that size of Byzantine would be like Persia on end of 19th century. Backward nation which is effectively under booth of another nation.

Oh yes, a surviving Byzantium would have a very interesting relationship with Russia and all the slavs really. However a strong Byzantium would mean Greek would remain prestige language and a "High culture" similar to French in Europe.

Well if Europe balkanizes into Nation States like in OTL, than it would be without question one of the most powerful counties on the face of the planet. However a lot of the same could be said for many ancient empires if they had lasted to the modern day. Byzantium does have the advantage of having an unbroken High Culture and historical continuity that other countries would be inspired by.

Way too many possible outcomes. If the world generally proceeds as per OTL and we make estimates based on the regions, you'd end up with a population around 120M and a top-15 GDP.

What made the ottoman and byzantine empire powerful was the fact that they owned the Europe gate way to the slik road.

But once that Portuguese invade the indian ocean and redirect that trade to south africa and libson they will inevitably lose that income stream and enter a period of decline.

150 million? Greece,Bulgaria,Cyprus,Macedonia, southern Serbia, Albania and Anatolia. No communism, no massive 20th century wars and relatively high fertility rates post demographic transition and recent prosperity.
