Strange Challenge

This would have to be towards the end of the alloted window. Britain's second attempt to join the EEC failed owing to a French Veto or terms that were unnaceptable to the people. The UK government decided to work through the European Free Trade Area instead which includedUnited Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland and Portugal. However as progress towards political union developed Switzerland and Austria opted out to preserve their neutral status. Portugal still under a fascist regime was excluded on grounds of failing democratic credentials. Iceland had joined EFTA in 1970 and agreed to the Union. Finland however remains an associate member following pressure from the Soviet Union. Ireland refuses to join what is seen as a Northern European protestant block but the protestants in Northern Ireland are in largely in favour but Paisley finds he has little in common with the Swedes. Political union slowly follows

Very good point even if it leaves very little room for creating the political union.

When I 1st read the start of the thread it sounded like a pretty impossible challenge, without something outlandish. However you came up with a very interesting idea that sounds logical under the circumstances. Presumably inspired in part by the proposed Anglo-French Union in 1940? Also, after the defeat of Stalin's empire it sounds like a very pleasant world, at least in Europe.

Not sure how the union would handle the break-up of the British empire. Or how much tension there would be between the French dominated Europe and its neighbours. [I would expect France to seek good relations with the Poles. Czechs etc as a counter to balance the greater power of Germany. Also Germany would probably be somewhat weakened by being the major battleground for the bulk of the war. However in the longer run, without the excesses of the Nazis, I could see Germany seeking to lose its junior status. Also as Russia reformed it would be a factor economically if not militarily and would resent a France that was too protectionist on the region under their domination].

However could be a potentially much happier world. And I like the idea of the 'Flower Union'.:D
