I have a few promts/ideas that others can adopt (I'm not really a good writer all of the time):

A German soldier visiting his extended family (parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, as well as his nephews and nieces) after returning from his post near the French border.

A French couple enjoying a day in Syndicalist Paris.

A zeppelin tour over Mittleafrika in 2020.

An old Irishman and his granddaughter on the day Ireland is declared a Republic.

An AUS rebellion against Pelley's coup that overthew the Kingfish.

A night in a upscale night club in Shanghai

Feel free to adopt!

I wanted to write this for a while, however I wanted to be on the right mood for such a narrative, something I only got it now, so let's go.

December 28, 1937

Warrant Officer Oliver Stone looked forward, trying to believe on what his eyes saw. A few moments passed as he watched something that he had feared for weeks, maybe even months, but now seemed to relieve himself.
"It is over...?" tough him, as he tried to identify something inside the smoke coming from Columbus town hall.
"These have been terrible years..." tough him, as on a rare moment of carelessness, he took a cigarette from his pocket and lighted it, then proceeded to return to his cover as he breathed the smoke.

These really have been terrible years.

Oliver Stone was just 15 when the american depression exploded, his family managed their money at the best and could withstand the first months of the depression, but soon the layoffs turned him, his father, his grandfather and his younger brother jobless and the money stopped coming in, and then the hunger began to take part on their lives. A few months into the depression he joined the IWW, was lectured on syndicalism, took part on social actions, gave his family scant money reserves as donations for his local trade union, being repaid with bread and butter bought and distributed by the IWW, the depression was harsh, but they managed to pass it through.
Then, the black monday happened. Economical chaos, further layoffs, deflation and a new major problem that had been present before, but radicalized incredibly on the following years after the american crash: The political radicalization. Clashes began to happen between the IWW and the Share Your Wealth clubs, two organizations that should be helping the population to endure as the central government ignored the pleas of their own people, now were fighting, a fight ordered by their two leaders, two very popular figures of immense following who preached war against each other. Oliver was not a ideologue, he was not a radical, he couldn't understand why so much hatred if both groups wanted to help the people, he had childhood friends that had joined the share your wealth society, but some even had cut contact with him as he told them that he was at the IWW. Horrible times, Harsh times, but not worse than what was to come.

The second american civil war began. Columbus was taken on a state of hysteria, but not a hysteria of fear, instead people were taking over the streets with the american and the IWW flags to preach their words of revolution, of power, of unity and struggle against capitalism. Oliver was there, after being invited by his friend, but he couldn't appreciate what was coming for him, his grandfather passed away two weeks prior, and now potentially millions of people were happily going to march for the end of their lifes, to kill other americans, to stick a bayonet on someone stomach over and over again until their body stopped resisting and their eyes stopped reacting. Political violence was everywhere at that moment, he could see people being dragged outside a house where SYW meetings used to take place. "Hunger, unemployment and now violence". Oliver knew how unemployment would end, he would be drafted, along other millions of men and also women and be sent to the carnage. Even tough many held their will to serve on their hearts, in truth they had say on being drafted or not, every single able bodied men should serve the army for three years of his life.

Soon, the dreams of a one march from Columbus, Ohio, to New Orleans crashed into a wall of river fortifications, trenches and endless air and artillery attacks. The elected President, Huey Pierce Long from Louisiana managed to use his resources on a more efficient way than the other pretenders. The War Powers Comitted was created and the industrialists flocked for his banner. The Chieff of the armed forces, Field Marshall George Patton proposed a strategy of encirclements and fast marches to take over as much strategically relevant targets as possible. On the first months all kentucky apart from a small portion on the east was captured by the AUS army. The central plains were efficiently seized, occupying everything from South Dakota to Arizona before the Pacific States could take such territories. The main AUS army marched through virginia encircling and crushing the USA army divisions and militias, until capturing Washington, and thus ending the first part of the war.
Without the MacArthurite junta, the capitalists, the conservatives and the populist sympatizers from the USA remnants went mostly for the AUS, while a minority joined the PSA. Filled with new reinforcements, supplies and renegades from the USA army, Patton pressed even further north and broke the CSA defenses through west pennysilvania and west Ohio, soon pushing through a hole on the CSA lines following the superior river until reaching Buffalo in New York, cutting the possibility of reinforcements from the west reaching the CSA troops who had just recently occupied all New England. A force large enought to stall the CSA there was left and the bulk of Patton's army corps moved to the ohio frontline, and then rammed into it while a second spearhead came from Kentucky into Indiana, breaching the CSA large, but militia trained, force, even reaching Michigan before Patton had captured all of Ohio, thus trapping one and a half CSA army inside a huge pocket.

His brother was somewhere in New York, Stone knew this since his unit retreated to the New Englander front after Patton reached the superior lake and he received reports of their divisions, including a list of alive members that included his brother. The three following weeks proved to be the worst part of the combat for Oliver Stone, regardless of what he had seen on the indiana front, things had been turning into hell in Ohio.

1584161784251.jpeg

Columbus Pre war was a beatifull city, even tough it was falling in disrepair the personal touch of the city was kept: many large streets, a few major buildings and many, many cars driving through the streets. Through september, october and november the city got mauled by the superior Unionist air force, especially after the stocks of oil began to deplete after the supply line from new england was cut, making it harder for the eastern syndicate air command to use their air force efficiently, thankfully the forces in new england still had access from oil being imported from the french commune and the union of Britain, so the situation was safer, but still difficult, for their air command.

The pocket proved to be the worst part, as contact was also lost with Chicago, all the forces inside needed the resources from Ohio to be kept fighting. First Cleveland was encircled and captured, taking a sizeable force with it. Then the never ending unionist offensive drove all forces closer and closer to Columbus, while the CSA counter offensives from Illinois failed to break into Indiana. At this time Oliver began to be punished, sometimes phisically for his undisciplinate behavior and his defeatist attitude. It was clear that the continental army won't be able to save them and they were stripping the food from their homes, melting their own forks and knifes to make more bullets and taking their own blankets from their families at home to cover themselves at the front, there was no way to escape or to be saved, so the army should have surrendered!

But they didn't. The war continued, more divisions were encircled and destroyed, some by the terrible and brutal Silver Legionaries, under control of General Pedro Del Vale, Del Vale was a frustrated white supremacist, as he was a latino and many of his "comrades" didn't considered him as a "true" white. He pushed his frustration on the battlefield using his legionaries on the most brutal way possible against the enemy, so until they surrender the syndicate soldiers, many of them being afroamericans, would be subject to rentless bombardments and artillery fire. Day after day his troops marched close to Columbus, and Oliver being a mestizo himself was afraid of his future, and also of his black father who was also fighting but on the northern front of the pocket.

Finally the city was reached on decemberg and the attack would begin. The starved and low on ammunition defenders would suffer under the artillery and close air support bombardements falling on their heads, especially because the civilians couldn't be properly evacuated, thus a few comissars were selected to move them inside pre made zones on the cities from the frontline to "less dangerous" areas of the city. As they ran out of places to retreat , his units were allowed to surrender to prevent the deaths of the civilians. For weeks both sides fought valiantly, some times even ferocious as entire buildings had to be cleared, just to be counter attacked by the opposite site and losing even more manpower in the process. Long was advised a few days before about the battle that was to start, so he ordered Del Vale to use the minimun amount of violence possible to prevent as much civilian deaths inside the city, and also to hand over the surrendered soldiers and the captured civilians to the normal army units for they to take care of them. Any case of misstreatment of a citizen or a surrendered soldier by a member of the silver legion would result on the perpetrator sent to be court martialed.

The fighting remained intense, the bombings and the artillery too, even tough the defenders were broken on pockets and entire places were cleared. Oliver killed, fled, spared and retreated with his dwillingly unit, until he ended on a building a few squares away from the combat and was put on guard on a window that allowed him to see the town hall. He had been there for two days, taking only 3 hours of sleep every night, to check any enemy advance in the area.

Oliver sucked all the remaneing smoke from his cigarette, before dropping it on the ground. The AUS flag as on the Town Hall, the battle was over. He went into the middle of the room on the third floor and shouted for everyone inside to hear:
— The Unionist flag is planted on the Town Hall, the battle is over, everyone.
Lieutnant Mark Reinold face turned into red, as he pushed the table where the radiowoman was receiving orders.
— It is only over when we receive the final order of surrender, of when we are all killed. — babbled the comissar, keeping his hand close toOl his gun on his hip.
— The city fell. — said Oliver on his negative tone — Every death after now it is useless, they have the city.
Mark pushed him back, making him fall into the ground and began to threaten him.
— I can kill you now, you f*cking traitor, this would save a bullet for the enemy, what do you think?
Oliver punched the officer on the stomach, as everyone in the room moved to stop the fight.
— I think that the only person who should be killed is you, Mark! You have been leading us through hell and until now we all have been following your orders... but it is over, and you want us to die for absolutely nothing? The reinforcements are not coming, there is nothing we can do.
Mark face was red on anger, but he knew something he could use to switch the morale of the others in his favour.
— One of the units present in our area is formed by integralists, a entire infantry division. They are fighting on the stores at just 200 meters from here. If you want you can try to surrender to this Natpops, or even better, you can try to surrender to the silver legion, look at your skin colour, they would love to receive you, you just need to ask politely!
Desobeying the hierarchy, Oliver shouted to the radio man:
— Did you heard any order to surrender?
The radiowoman dropped her papers in shock, but then recomposed herself and replied:
— G-general Cannon asked all units with spare ammo to try to break their siege and to bring ammo for his headquarters on downtown... — Her face went blank after this — You said that the Town Hall was captured... — She then turned angry — The town hall is very close to his HQ! He might be dying right now! He d-didn't sent any order to surrender or to continue fighting!
Oliver dropped his gun, as everyone looked at him.
— Someone shoot this motherf**ker, now! It is a order! A order passed by your comissar! — barked Mark.
— Shut the f**k up! — shouted another soldier — It is over, you are no higher than anyone here.
Oliver asked for help, and after restraining the comissar and getting some white blankets from beds on that building, they could display the surrender message for everyone close to the building, and soon every single other building on the area began to copy the move, even the ones still on gunfights with the enemy, using their very last rounds.

The battle ended on the following day. Some troops kept their positions until their total destruction to the last man. Others surrendered after running out of ammo or during the enemy assault. General Cannon asked for a ceasefire and received a delegation from both General Mascarenhas de Moraes of Brazil and General Del Vale, and surrendered at the 21 hours of december 28 of 1937.

After eaving the building, Oliver was ready for what could come: He could be arrested, tortured, sent into a prisioner camp, maybe even killed by those damned natpops, harsh times were coming for him, but as he tough, if he survived, there would be peace at the end.
— Mister? — asked a soldier that he didn't noticed. This soldier was annotating the names and tags of the surrendered soldiers, he spoke a good, but accented english.
— Oliver Stone. — replied Oliver and then got surprised: The officer was black, and his uniform cleary was neither silver legionary nor the normal AUS one, he probably is a brazilian.

— Follow in line, please, you will take the 55th truck to the prisioner camp achilles, in Kentucky.
— Yes sir. — replied him.
Oliver walked into the truck, and left for his destiny.

The end.

So, I had this conversation on the KR discord and came up with some ideas

A famous picture taken on UoB ruled Ireland is from a IRA poster written "You can defeat us 100 times, we will rise 101", of which there is a small poster glued over it with a pro Irish socialist republic note "So we will fight you 101 and even 102 times"

Now a small narrative

Chairman Comrade Mosley on the opening of the mid-month session of the TUC, on regards for President MacArthur recent notes on the Irish Republican army
"Continuing on the irish legionarist matter, recently the tyrant who rules about one eight of the american soil, mister, or better, conducator MacArthur recently received the former bourgeisie dictator of Ireland, mister Michael Collins on his "emergency capital" on Denver, of which he said quote "The irish have fought 800 years of wars against the opression from the main british island, and they shall continue to do so"
There is a small stop while some laughs happen, the camera focus on the irish delegation of the TUC laughing as he reads the note, then Mosley continues
"Well, first of all I must thank mister MacArthur for being just 38 years back on time, thinking that the british empire is still around, different from the Kaiser whose minds is still stuck on the 19th century. That being said, I must said that if the IRA think they fought for 800 years even tough they were created in 1919, I must say: What about 900 years?"
There is a pause of Mosley words as the delegates and the public cheers
"Oh even better, what about 900 years...more?"
There is more cheering.

A third narrative.

Guang Cheun, a chinese young adult.

Guang was running through the streets of baoding on the aftermath of another Japanese bombardment. Dressing his usual, and only, suit, a brown with white lines and his bowtie, he had tried to reach that building, the building that at this point had become part of his life. The firetrucks had arrived first and the police had close the area.
— I need to know what happened! Is the university bombed? — demanded him with anger and sorrow.
— Yes, but the fire will be under control. Return to your home now! — demanded the fireman.
A short argument happened, but he backed down, maybe Guang could force himself him by showing his documents and the young China party pin he had, but that would be a violation of his personal ideals, he fought the harmony association and the Zhilli officers who that did with him, just a few years ago. Guang walked towards the other side of the street, he could see the fire coming from the building even I it was being put down. He lighted a cigarette, sat on a bench filled with ash from this night bombing and sucked the smoke.
"Is my career over?"

Guang was born in 1919 on luoyang, son of a shop owner and his wife. Guang was raised on a lower middle class house through the harsh 1920s and the stagnating 30s. His father was conscripted to fight against the northern expedition and died in action. His mother kept the store and raised Guang alone. When he was 13 years in 1932, already literate, he began to tale interest on reading the newspapers and trying to get some interest on political matters, he made drawings of his heroes, Wu Peifu, Emperor Xuanton, Wilhelm II, Otto Von Bismarck and kept a old nap he gained from his teacher showing the world, of which he positioned on the wall close to his bed.
By 1934 he met a local member of the young China party, Zi Luan, who held a small political position on louyang city council. Li was impressed by Guang memory and his capacity to keep a debate against someone older than him and even make some strong arguments, he really believed that the monarchy would need to modernize and get rid of the day to day corruption to work, and corruption was something that Li understood a lot.

— See that man? — said Li, pointing to a important Harmony politician on the city who was shopping on the ooen market.
— Yes, he is on newspapers all the time.
— And what he did wrong?
— Well... — Guang was afraid of saying, but he pushed himself to — He receives money from these merchants to allow them to continue selling here.
— Good boy, now what about this man? — li took a picture of the local YCP leader.
— Your boss, my boss, the man who like us will cleanse China from corruption! — replied Guang, optimistic as a child.
— He accepts a monthly bribe to vote for projects of the harmony association.
— He what? — Guang lowered his voice, he scared a woman behind both — He won't do it.
Li placed his hand over Guang shoulder:
— Corruption is everywhere, sadly, so we need to take care everywhere at everytime. Our friends are corrupt sadly, and I almost fell to it.
Guang was devastated for a while and tough about leaving politics, but through some connections, Li decided to give him a gift. One day Guang was with his mom on the shop, writing poems and a speech from a certain politican when the news arrived, he was invited to be a student on the university of baoding, the YCP would pay for his studies, in ezange hr would help to evolve and adapt the party ideology, something he accepted immediately.

Time passed, he found himself on the process of becoming a very influential ideologue, he learned about politics, statecraft, religion, schools of tough, liberalism, nationalism, he spoke with his teachers, learned with them and teached them things, he gave lectures on local YCP headquarters and began to be noticed, then the coup came.

The emperor bodyguards killed Wu Peifu and Cao Kun, and on a few days everything fell out of control. Thankfully he was at baoding so all troops on the area were lot for the royal government, sparing the city from combat. While he didn't took part in the bureocratic reorganization of China, he helped on the ideological side, provided knowledge for the politicians and attended party meetings, even once being on the parliament when the emperor himself entered on the building and ordered the session to be open. On the following years local wars against warlords started, and as industrialization accelerated his standard of living increased, soon China would be united, and he would be spared from the combat, he was a ideologue of course, a true genius, someone who came from a merchant family and could provide a now comfortable life for his aging mother. China would be unified thanks to Xuantong, Yan Xishan, the Young China Party and him, ans then a true constitutional monarchy would rise on Asia.

And then the war came, as Japan and the fengtian republic invaded China. Bombardments became a common sight every night, while thousands moved to the frontline and thousands of wounded, mained and psychologically broken shadows of men returned. The importation of foreign goods stopped, while the economy focused on the war and rationing restarted. Guang was not living badly, but things became considerably harder. Another tragic event was the death of Li in late 1940, aged only 53 after a strong flu. The political, ideological part of the YCP also lost influence to the militarist faction coming from the baoding department, many believed that the political reforms were done, China was unified apart from Xinjiang, Manchuria, Tibet and Mongolia, the structure of power and the constitution were there, so it was the time to build a army worth of Chinese glory. Months of war continued while the Japanese and fengtien bombardments worsened more and more. The building close to the following square to his home collapsed, classes were cancelled and blackouts became common, and then, at the late night of September 13 of 1941 as je was listening to the radio since he couldn't sleep he heard the report:
"It has been confirmed, the university of baoding was hit by two waves of Japanese bombs, the fireman have been dispatched..."

Back to the present, Guang finished his cigarette and returned home. On the following day he saw the ruined building, his heart was in pain and seemed that his life was over.
— Professor? — asked one of his students. Guang moved his face to the other side fast to clean his tears.
— What are you doing here? Do you want to fell.misrrable too? — asked Guang on a irritated tone — It is gone! We cannot continue until this place is restored, and the documents, the notes, the books, most of them are gone!!!
The student walk back a few centimeters, the professor was right, it was a terrible moment, but...
— The war will end one day, won't it? — asked the student, on a passive agressive tone.
— Yes-
— So we will rebuild it, it will be larger and better! — replied the student — Way better than it was before! As long we are alive we should continue, because if we desist now, we are going to lose everything!
Guang blinked for a second.
— Did you reader too much of that army pamphlets, Zhao?
The student scratched his head, and admired:
— Quite, bur you reached me to read from all kinds of sources to understand what our adversaries think, so I did and learned.
Guang looked to the school, some trucks and machinery just had arrived, he was right, the school will be rebuilt one day, China will be rebuilt one day, he, and his students, and his friends and family needed to concentrate to survive this crisis, and then things could return to normal, a China without the fear of despots, warlords and foreign powers bombing it, a constitutional, liberal, modern, sovereign and democratic China.
— Here, let me drive you home, Zhao. — said Guang, pointing to his car.
— Thanks teacher, I got a new edition of the national geographic magazine, do you want to take a look? — said the student, entering the car.
— Only if your dad prepare that delicious Brazilian coffe for me. It is not like I will have to work today.
Both laughed and drove away.

My attempt to write a kid of script based on one of my favorite History Channel Shows: Dogfights. Sort of a work in Progress but lemmie hear some feedback.

Key:

N = Narrator
H = Historian
V.S. = Victor Sato

N: The Syndicalist Revolution is dying! In the skies over occupied Ireland, Entente pilots try to pave the way for Operation Defiant Serpent and the liberation of the British Isles. Standing in their way is the pride of the Union of Britain: the Republican Navy and her formidable carrier fleet.

N: Now, you’re in the cockpit as Entente fighters, dive bombers, and torpedo planes write history in the battle that will decide the fate of the British Isles and the Third Internationale itself! Experience the battle, descent the tactics, relieve the Death of the Red British Navy!

*cue theme music

N: April 15th 1944. In the Western Approaches of the North Atlantic a squadron of F6F Hellcats from the carrier U.S.S. Grant roars at 20,000 feet above sea level. The air around the planes chills the pilots inside as they watch the skies for signs of the enemy.

N: Flying Lead on his flight of four, Lt. Victor Sato keeps a steady hand on the controls of his plane and watches his radar instruments with a careful gaze.

V.S: In those moments when you’re heading out in a direction everything’s tensed up. You’re wondering when all hell might let loose. But it hasn’t happened yet. No matter how many times I’ve gone up in the air it was always the hardest to remain focused when things were the calmest.

N: Sato and the rest of his squadron are attached to Admiral Ernst King’s 4th Fleet. Their mission is to clear the skies of enemy fighter aircraft before the planned air raid over Cork. Operation Defiant Serpent's two prongs evision and attack on Cork by the Americans and an attack on Belfast by the Canadians. These Hellcats have no idea that they’re about to make history.

N: At 10 o’clock high Sato spots something on the horizon. At first he can’t make out the shapes, but radar confirms that there’s at least a dozen contacts in the area.

V.S: We knew that we were supposed to be the only flight sent this early, and that these guys were coming from the other direction. What we also didn’t expect was to see an enemy flight out so far away from Ireland while we were cruising.

N: What Sato and the rest of the Hellcats don’t understand at this moment is that these planes have not taken off from Ireland. They are elements of the Republican Fleet Air Arm of the Union of Britain, carrier aircraft launched as part of the Union of Britain’s last line of naval defense against the Entente.

*cut to archive footage

N: By 1944 the Commune of France and the Socialist Republic of Italy have been defeated by the combined forces of Entente and Reichspakt armies. While the Third Interationale’s erstwhile ally Russia continues to fight in the east, and a deadly ground war is fought between the Internationale and Entente in South America, Europe’s last Syndicalist power stands in the British Isles.

N: With Entente naval control over routes to most major sources of oil, most of the oil in the Union of Britain’s stockpile has been stored away for the Republican Airfleet. The navy has limited time to make its own moves to defend both Great Britain and Ireland from the coming Entente Invasion.

N: The Union Admiralty comes to the conclusion that waiting in port for the American and Canadian Fleets, which comprise the bulk of the Entente Atlantic Navy, is suicide. Sandwiched between the Kaiserliche Marine in the English Channel and the Entente Combined Fleet in the Western Approaches the main Republican Battle Fleet makes a fateful decision.

N: Under Admiral Edmund Anstice the First Air Fleet of the Republican Navy moves from Portsmouth and into the Western approaches. Their goal is to hopefully find and destroy or at least severely damage the American 4th Fleet. If the 4th Fleet is knocked out of the fight it might take months for the Americans to assemble a new task force. Time that the Union of Britain Desperately needs.

N: At 2:30 P.M. Lt. Sato hears his radio crackle to life. Captain Reese Munken calls his squadron to action.

V.S. And he says “Where there’s Seafires there’s flat tops” And I knew right then the mission had changed.

N: Sato’s radio crackles again as Munken signals back to the carrier they have made contact with a new enemy. The next wave of American fighters will come in expecting a dogfight. But for the Squadron of Hellcats already roaring towards their enemy, it is going to be do or die today.

Good stuff as always Jank!

It might be worth describing what the show is for people like me who've never heard of it before. Also, Operation Defiant Serpent sounds like the kind of over the top name the modern day US military would use. Operation Defiant or Operation Serpent would work better for the World War II-era US military.

Sure, here's an example from history channel of the show. Maybe I'll include the clip in a formal thing.

I can't write any pieces involving the Kaiserreich but here are some prompts I thought of:

  • A family torn a part by the American Civil War;
  • A play by play of the 1936 American Presidential Election, either with multiple POVs or focusing on an objective third person narrator;
  • A trial of French Commune/Union of Britain politicians by their national governments; and, my personal favorite,
  • A snap shot into the mental state of Savinkov, including his increasing psychological instability. Bonus points for having it be long form, i.e. over the course of multiple decades.

A few new prompts:

An Arab soldier in the Ottoman army torn between his loyalty to the Empire and the promise of freedom for his own people.

A family of Russian Jews fleeing to Germany in 1938.

A group of syndicalists in the Deep South trying to cross the AUS border to join the CSA militia.

A group of Communard French soldiers in Berlin after the defeating the German Empire in the 2WK.

The Japanese launching the first man into space...and the Germans freaking out about it.

The Sultan's Granddaughter learning about the history of the Ottoman Empire in 2020.

The German Empire during the Corvid-19 shutdown.

A romance between a IJN officer and a Japanese-American girl in Hawaii.

Got any ideas @theg*ddam*hoi2fan @Worffan101 ?

These could work, although not all of them in the same timeline.
I might produce something. PM if interested.

This story is inspired by an idea @freivolk had for a scene the Kaiserreich TV franchise collab (which I may reboot later this year)

1917. July 31.

The Western Front.

The soldiers of the German Imperial Army are holding against the enemy, but only just. An unexpected advance by the Entente armies have taken them by surprise, first by a bombing raid by the RAF, quickly followed by massed infantry and scores of new French and British tanks.

The Germans are making a valiant effort to defend the line but are suffering appalling casualties for it. A machine gun nest is utterly destroyed by a tank, several nearby soldiers screaming as the explosion caused them to be engulfed with flames. Other soldiers, taken by surprised, were shot down by sniper fire.

In the chaos, one young soldier is encouraging his friend to head to cover. "Quickly Hanns! If we can just make it..."

Suddenly an explosion occurred near him, and then he felt sharp, burning pain in his left leg, right arm and neck.....

Erich Remarque woke up suddenly in his seat, covered in cold sweat. God, it was 1936, nearly twenty years and the horrors of the Weltkrieg still haunted his dreams. He breathed in deeply, calming his nerves. He looked out the bus window and saw that he had just arrived at his stop. He had an important meeting about the film adaptation for his latest bestseller. Best not be late for that.

After getting off, he walked by several familiar buildings, only to stop half way. He turned to look at the department store next to him and saw red banners with a strange symbol on them. Almost like a four-legged spider.

That wasn't there last time he was in this part of Berlin....

He suddenly saw smoke nearby. Immediately thinking it was a fire, he dashed forward, hoping to help. But when he got there, he saw only a large bonfire surrounded by a large mob. Men in brown shirts carrying Roman-like banners with that strange symbol on them. Children were actually throwing books into the bonfire, laughing in glee as they went up in flames.

Erich never saw anything so appalling in his life. What was the purpose of such a thing? Was Germany not a country that prided itself on literature and education?

The smoke grew around him as he walked away. He suddenly bumped into someone. He recognized the man immediately. A fellow writer and friend he had known for last fifteen years.

"Jacob? What's going on? I thought you were in the country, visiting your niece?"

But Jacob just stared a him blankly, a haunted look in his eyes. Erich noticed that he had a yellow star embedded on his jacket. Almost like the Star of David.

The smoke cleared a more people with yellow stars appeared. Men, women and children. Even a few elderly Jewish rabbis. They all had the same vacant look on their faces.

Erich turned around a saw that they were walking slowly towards a nearby train.

"You there! Get away from that swine!"

Erich saw two tough looking soldiers with a vicious-looking dog approach them.

"What are you talking about?" Erich said to them. "This man is a German citizen..."

They just pushed him away. Jacob just quietly turned away and walked to the train.

Erich somehow found himself wandering the streets. Those red banners were now on every building. Several shops looked like they were vandalized by hooligans with anti-Semitic smears.

He saw more men in brown shirts, marching down the street. He saw people cheering them on, all of them wearing an armband with the spider symbol.

He was suddenly standing in massive crowd of these armband wearing people. They were gathered in front of podium where a man was standing. Erich couldn't make out his face as the speaker was in the shadows. But he could hear him clearly.

He felt his heart quicken with fear as the mysterious speaker spoke. He spoke words of senseless hate, of rage, of conquest. Of war. Of something called the master race...

The people around him however were enthralled by these words. They lifted their right arms to make a strange salute and began to shout: "Sig Heil! Sig Heil! Sig Heil!"

Enrich knew he had to get away. He tried to push past the people surrounding him but they wouldn't budge. He had to get out. He had get out, out out!

But the people continued to shout as they pressed against him, almost suffocating him.

"Sig Heil! Sig Heil! Sig Heil! Sig Heil! Sig Heil!"

Erich suddenly woke up, panting. He was in a hotel room, a bottle of wine next to his bed. Ignoring the beautiful woman sleeping next to him, he rushed to the balcony window. He looked out at the nearby flag flying next to the balcony. It was the familiar black, white and red flag of the Empire. Looking around, he saw from his vantage point a billboard advertising a zeppelin tour in Mittleafrika, civilian airships floating serenely like clouds above the buildings, a poster showing a new film starring Hedy Lamarr. A group of rabbis walking down the street without a care in world.

He sighed deeply in relief. It was still Germany. The real Germany.

"Gott sei Dank...it was just a dream. Just a dream..."

He suddenly saw smoke nearby,.

Erich saw two tough looking soldiers with a vicious looking dog approach them.

"What are you talking about?" Erich said to them. "This man is a German citizen..."

They just pushed him away. Jacob just quietly turned away and walked to the train.

Great job. I´m impressed.

I would use Remarque as POV-character. One idea is, that he meets a street-artist (and trick-thief), a young black woman, which has trouble with the cops. She get out of it, by playing the most cliche-ridden, cartoony African possible. Only Erich notice, that she has no african, but an american accent. In the end it is impliede, that she is Josefine Baker.

So is this a request or a sample of a story you’re writing?
