Stg 40: German Assault Rifles in the Battle of France?

special forces maybe

The Stg44 is dependent on the Kurz round invented/developed in 1938. The spec for a weapon (MP43) is issued in 1939 and it takes to 1942 to have it tested enough to put into low level mass production. 10,000 produced before it becomes the Stg44. by comparison there were 1millionMP38/44 produced and 14million 98k withe germans still using captured weapons.

To get anything beyond test batches the Kurz has to be invented in 1934/35. If that happens it might be feasible to have some degree of equipment for some troops in 1940 but unless you are deleting the production of the 98k there is no way germany will have the capacity to equip a significant number of divisions with the Stg40 unless it is a substitute for the MP38 (and therefore a minor weapon) or there are fewer divisions in total.

Sticking the Pz grenadier with a special weapon just complicates both supply and training and given the overall excellent performance I am not sure what margin it gives you.

And generally its irrelevant. bullets don't kill people in WW2 HE does - having more, better and much better supplied artillery might help having an automatic weapon able to fire 4x longer than you already have don't matter that much.

Not to mention that if you have demonstrated its 'massive' superiority it will be in Spain so everyone will be re-equipping in the 30's the basic point that noone needed a full calibre 7. whatever mm or .30 whatever inch had been known since WW1 at least in the UK but the plant to produce those weapons and that ammunition and significant stocks existed. If it really was that superior you will probably find a Red army with real live soldier proof AK47s or at least Fedorov Automats with proper tactical employment not the overengineered German version in 1941 and quite possibly the French with MAS 44 in 1940.
