What if Steve Irwin didn't encounter that stingray on Sept 4, 2006? What if he were still alive? How long would he continue this career for?

Also, even if he did get stabbed, could he have been saved? Perhaps if he didn't pull the barb from his chest?

R.I.P.

Well, Bindi Sue would probably have not had as much of a career as she has had in OTL so far. Return to Nim's Island would have starred Abigail Breslin, for example.

I believe his media career would continue to expand - and he was already being well received and established in the US across several different markets. I believe his children would still follow that trajectory and work closely with him on his show/s and content.

However whats more interesting would be the ITTL relationship with his father Bob - especially given what we know the relationship between Bob and Terri Irwin was like (not pretty) and how Steve walks that razors edge, which feeds into my next point as he would continue to balance his commercial/business/entertainment interests and and his environmentalism and conservationism - but their not mutually exclusive of course.

From what I've read he wasn't very political (in the Australian context), but he was viewed by some environmentalists as a bit of a cop out due to his involvement with tourism. Whether this gap continues to widen I don't know.

Eventually, he would have pushed his luck too far. He was considered nuts even by Australian standards, and that is saying something.
I have that feeling too. I think something similar to OTL could have happened, perhaps he gets bitten by a venomous snake instead. Certainly a chance for that to happen if he were bitten by a taipan, for example. A cone snail could probably do the job too.

Wonder if Bindi Irwin still does Dancing With the Stars ITTL? That season, she was the favorite to win (and did win), IIRC; then again, it helped that her dance partner was Derek Hough, who's one of the best dancers on the show (I started to think so after he led Amber Riley (aka Mercedes from Glee) to the win on that show; his other wins had been good dancers up to that point (1)) and has had the most wins on that show...

(1) His partners up to that point that he'd won with had been Brooke Burke, Nicole Scherzinger, Jennifer Grey, and Kellie Pickler, who were all experienced dancers (particularly Grey, who's most famous, of course, for her role in Dirty Dancing) or had dance experience.

I get the feeling that there is the chance that Steve would've been on Dancing With The Stars before her if he lived. Whether he'd win it or not is up to debate.

I don’t see why he couldn’t have survived such a bit. It still takes time for a snakebite to kill, even a taipan’s. If they had personnel with medical training and anti-venom on-hand it nearby he’d live. Now it still takes time (weeks) to recover from such a bite, but it’s perfectly survivable.

Would he have gotten involved at all with the Sea Shepherds? One of their ships is named after him and during an early episode of Whale Wars, Terri gave them a send off from Hobart.

On a side note, when my son was young he loved Steve's show on Animal Planet and when he saw him at the Macy's Parade in NYC he went crazy.

I hate the cop out argument by the environmentalists just like I hate the line from some of the more academic types who looked down their noses at him because he was a bit of a showman. The thing is he probably accomplished more in terms of bringing attention to a variety of issues because of his involvement with tourism and because he was a bit of a showman because these qualities made him accessible, interesting, and dare I say fun. IMWO the people he criticize him for being a cop out are the real cop outs. The world is full of highly principled know it all types who never accomplish a damn thing but they call those who do accomplish things in an imperfect manner sell outs.

I personally only really became interested in environmentalism because of The Crocodile Hunter. It took until I was older to really get the message of course, but that show was a MASSIVE factor, as well as the book he and his wife wrote which I also loved.

I suspect he would be involved, but how directly I’m not sure. Sea Shepherd has attracted its share of controversy (depending on your POV) over the years.

I could see him being a big voice in the anti coal seam gas movement here in Australia though and I think he would be one of the leading voices of the Anti-Adani mine development here as well.

I dunno. The best episodes were the ones something happened and the showman disappeared and his eyes went steely. Despite the larikin act he could be deadly serious when he wanted. It would take something really quick and really unlikely to get him. Eg a poisonous barb to the heart, or a cone shell. Most poisonous stuff is too slow and has antivenoms, while brute force stuff like crocodiles and sharks you tend to be very aware of.

On a related and sad note, stingrays struck again yesterday.
