Steve Biko survives

What if Steve Biko managed to survive the police beating in 1977? Or even better, he managed to prevent from being arrested at all. What are the consequences?

POD: In 1976 nine black (SASO) activists were sentenced to imprisonment on Robben Island. They were supporters of Steve Biko. Next year Biko himself was murdered by police. If he had been arrested at the same time, and convicted and sent to Robben Island, it is unlikely he would have died in captivity.

A meeting between Mandela and Biko would be very interesting.

I can't say what might have happened had he not been beaten to death; I saw a movie about this once, years ago, but I don't really know much about Biko. Perhaps he would be president of SA today. Some of the police who beat him and others to death should be put on trial in the Hague. I just can't understand the Afrikaner mentality. Are they basically thuggish, or what? Sorry, just re-read Guns of the South.

I saw a movie about this also, a long time ago. The name was Cry Freedom if I recall correctly. Good show.

It's hard to speculate what might have happened if Nelson Mandela had met him. Mandela sometimes appeared to be actively against white people whilst in office. Biko openly wanted to make sure that equality between races in South Africa was truly genuine, when it happened at last.

Regarding the mentality of the Afrikaners, it was just the culture, if you ask me. Most of them were raised from birth to see any black men, or blacks period, as inferiors in every respect, and going against such institutionalized, cultural teachings is a difficult thing. Even individuals who actively want to do it can have trouble. Old habits, you know?

In any case, Biko was a brave man, and it's a shame he didn't get to see that for which he worked so hard.
