Steam Punk World War I?

Is WWI too late for Steam Punk? We have an alternate history game up for pre-order based on steam-driven land ships...not big tanks, but hundred-foot long dreadnoughts. I think it works, but do you all think WWI is too late for steam punk?

There is something similar going on in Westerfeld's Leviathan...although we don't have Mechs in our world. At least not yet. I'll be glad to supply a link to the game if you all would like, but I'm not trolling for orders, just looking for suggestions.

Since Steam Punk IMHO relies on a combination of retarding other competitive technologies, and advancing steam-driven ones beyond OTL, I would think WW1 is a good zenith of steam punk plausibility. As such its probably ideal for the setting of a game/story etc. Again, IMHO, Steam Punk assumes from the start that it is essentially a fantastic take on things, not a true alternative, so its internal logic of having no common internal combustion engine but having mega-steam engines is fine.

Thanks, I'll point that link to the designer. I also write alt-history fiction. Most of it based in our World at War universe... it's WW3...1985...but with a twist.

From the back cover of Revelation...the first WaW novel.

the unparalleled devastation wrought by the war has done more than slaughter untold thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and civilians. The destruction has torn the fabric of our reality and beckoned things, dark things, things that feed on blood and fear, into the lives of these combatants. World at War: Revelation tells of more than the crack of tank cannon, or the burp of an M-16’s three-round burst. Inside is also the howl of a Lycan, the speed of an attacking vampire, and the dark evil of an ancient demon.
