Status of the Papacy in Communist Italy?

With a POD of the Italian Communist Party winning the 1953 general elections in a landslide, how would the new Communist regime handle the status of Vatican City and the Papacy in general going forward?

Would complete expropriation of "church lands" be a possibility?

Best case scenario: They acknowledge the Vatican status as an independent nation.

Worst case scenario: They occupy the Vatican. This would however turn Italy into the worlds pariah. How would this affect their NATO memberships is anyone's guess.

It is very doubtful that they would take a radical stance towards the Vatican in 1953 particularly since the PCI would be under Togliatti's control and he signed the Lateran treaties in 1945 to acknowledge the Vatican's independence. It;s likely that tax exemptions and lenient laws for the church would be reversed but after the Salerno turn the Communists agreed not to pursue violent actions to support socialism and so there's absolutely no chance they'd do something as dumb as occupy the Vatican. Maybe some land is nationalised but it's not like the church ever held any great swathes of industry under its control
