State of Northern Virginia

What if during or following the Civil War, Virginia north of the Rappahannock and Rapidan Rivers had been carved off as a state of Northern Virginia, to be settled by Union veterans and Freedmen?

We might not have the mess we have now. Richmond treats Northern VA and the Hampton Roads area as its personal ATM, and we are sick and tired of it.

Many think the VA counties of Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William plus the MD counties of Montgomery, Prince Georges and Anne Arundel need to succeed and form the State of Beltway...

How would you feel about being in a state with DC?

How about Columbia, fuck the confusion that that is going to cause further.

Combine the northern Virginia counties with the District of Columbia. Put the capital of the new state right across the river, maybe Alexandria.

Anne Arundel County would be a stretch. Also not to get too sidetracked by the modern angle but it's hard to see there being a real interest in turning two safe democrat senate seats and two very likely ones into two republican, two purple, and 2 safe democrat seats.

I don't think you're going to see much of a push for a Northern Virginia as a state in the union as a result of the civil war unless the south eeks out its independence tbh. There's not going to be the kind of zeal for settling soldiers and freedmen there that you'd need to be successful otherwise and it's not like with west virginia where they knew roughly what they could expect it would do for balance in the senate of the time.

Wouldn't those counties be more likely to be attached Kanewha/West Virginia? In any case, what would the reason be for doing so? I don't believe Alexandria, Fairfax, etc… had teh same ideological differences with Richmond that Charleston et al. had.

Considering that I was born & raised in Hampton Roads and now work in Loudon Co., I say that’s a BIG understatement!

I think the most logical match would be to merge Northern Virginia with Maryland.
For that matter I would have merged the Carolina's, after stripping away their Appalachian regions to West Virginia - along those stretches of Tennessee and Georgia that are in the mountains, creating effectively a State of Appalachia, based on West Virginia
Kansas and Iowa dividing up most of Missouri... well you get the idea.

I live in Loudoun County and work in Fairfax County (and lived in Fairfax County before that); you're right when you say it's a big understatement.

You see roads down south being repaved that don't need it while roads in Northern VA are literally falling apart because Richmond takes our money and gives it to counties that don't provide their fair share of taxes...

And we’re leaving out the whole issue of tolls; $40.00+ on 66 ONE WAY!
Yeah, I’m on my soapbox again.

Wasn't it up to something like $70 one morning? I heard about this and wondered just what in the #@$%(* was going on!
