State of Franklin?

What would be the outcomes if Franklin (look it up) sucessfully became a state, What affects would it have? (Besides a extra star.......) Could we see alot of smaller states develop? Would this screw up the Senate? Could we see balkanized States? Will more restricitons as states be added?

I don't think the suggestion ever really made any sense whatsoever in the first place{even though it was 200 years ago.}, but yeah, I think more smaller states, could in fact, develop.

Well Heres the Story of how they wanted to become a state. NC gave up the land to the fed and the settlers thier feared it could be sold to spain or france. They ask to become a state, small Milita battle Forces wanting to become state curshed :). But lets say they didn't......

I think City states might arise, if Franklin becomes a state.

If Franklin gets International intervention, We could see some Independent States trying to arise, and maybe some succession from the Union.

Overall, it is an Ameriscrew

Like the State of Chicago? The State of St. Louis? Im not sure people would like thier massive states having the same representation as cities in the Senate.

Which is precisely why smaller states like Franklin never happened. It's also one of the reasons why Jefferson's plans for states in the Old Northwest wasn't adopted.

While the population level needed for a territory to gain statehood became a de jure requirement, there has always been a de facto lower geographical size limit at work too.

There's a fairly recent book written by Mark Stein called How The States Got Their Shapes. Get it and read it as it will answer all of your questions and we'll be spared thread like this.

I have read it.

Good. Reading is a good thing.

this is not about that, its about if it became a state!

Stein explains why it didn't become a state so, in order for it to become a state, we have to change one of the reasons why it didn't become a state. That change is called a POD and that's what we discuss here: PODs PODs are important because they alone determine the events that follow.

It's useless to ask IF Franklin became a state without knowing HOW Franklin became a state. The HOW is determined by the POD, the POD then shapes the events which follow, and those following events are exactly what you're asking about in this thread.

Last I checked his book wasn't a alternate history.

And neither are your open ended, vague, POD-free questions.

Tell us how it happened and we'll have a better chance of mulling over which plausible events could happen next.

Here's a slightly more accurate map, the state was a tiny bit larger: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~george/countyformations/northcarolinaformationmaps.html, click on one of the years 1785 -1787.

Or to see what this looks like from West of the Cumberland as well: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~george/countyformations/tennesseeformationmaps.html.

I think it depends a lot on what happens to the Indian Lands to the west and south, and whether counties like Davidson end up deciding to stay in NC (probably creating a nice exclave), joining with Franklin, or forming their own state.

Fine, Franklin threatens to Join New Spain or be recognized. Would that work?

No, there is zero chance of them wanting to join Spain. Nor would Spain likely want them.

This . . . makes no sense whatsoever.

I've got a possible explanation for a State of Franklin existing, although it's a little far-fetched. IIRC, during the start of the American Civil War, Eastern Tennessee was strongly against secession. According to wikipedia, (yeah, yeah, I know) it thought about forming its own Union breakaway state like West Virginia. Since the territories are both in Eastern Tennessee, have Eastern Tennessee return to the Union as the state of Franklin. After the war it stays separate or gains more of Tennessee?

I actually like this way of getting the State of Franklin.
