Star Wars WI: Splinter of the Mind's Eye made into a Film?

As some of you may know, the Star Wars EU book Splinter of the Mind's Eye was going to serve as a sequal to Star Wars if the first film wasn't a hit. However as we all know it was, and we got Empire Strikes Back instead. Let's say things go a bit differently though. Star Wars is still a hit, but Lucas decides he wants to make Splinter in the Mind's Eye before going on to do Empire.

What impact would this have on the film series? Would we see more Star Wars films?

You know, I think that we actually would see more Star Wars films. Many more, perhaps even than we got in OTL.

Here's why: if the original Star Wars is still a success but not a "blockbuster" success, then they can continue making sequels as a reliable money-earner -- but each film wouldn't be the "event" it is in OTL. This means that George Lucas becomes less attached to the series (as it's less of a success, he doesn't feel the same need to "nurture" it) and he sticks with his original plan of retreating to the role of executive producer of the series for all the sequels, letting other people handle all the writing and direction. This means that he won't eventually burn himself out on Star Wars in the early-to-mid-80s and give up on making any more films after his divorce, like he did in OTL.

So the series can actually continue through the 80s, if it keeps making profits. And actually, if they're lower-budget movies I guess they could also be made more quickly: once every two years, perhaps, rather than once every three. In fact, we might even see the realisation of George Lucas's original concept of twelve Star Wars films, like the old 1930s serials had twelve episodes. But, again, they'd have to keep on being reasonably successful.

presumably it would have to be rewritten to include Han and Chewie

Actually, it was deliberately written to exclude Han. Harrison Ford was only contracted for one film, unlike Mark Hamill & Carrie Fisher who were contracted for three -- Splinter of the Mind's Eye was written so they wouldn't need to bring him back. That's also why Han was frozen in carbonite at the end of The Empire Strikes Back: in case he refused to return for a third film.

That's not to say that Han would be gone forever from Star Wars -- if they made a third or a fourth film he may have returned for one of them.

Well, just for starters, there would be no need for
Leia being "revealed" to be Luke's sister - that was done to explain
why Luke's romance with Leia couldn't progress while Han was out of the way - And Han was out of the way because H. Ford as busy as Indiana
Jones. So, Luke and Leia aren't siblings. Plus, we get Old Halla an another minor
character.

Do you see a less "space opera" "SW"? Less of the anti-technological nonsense? ("Use the Force" =turn off the autopilot... Try that at 5000mph sometime.:eek::rolleyes:)

Does it have knock-ons to other SF films, too? To SF TV?

Also "Darth Vader" in the original film and in this one, contrary to Lucas, was just an evil Sith with the first name "Darth" and the last name "Vader", and was not Luke's father but just the man who killed his father. The whole "Luke, I am your father" thing came up during the writing of "ESB"; it wasn't preplanned. Most of the trilogy said to be preplanned wasn't.
