Star Wars - TV series instead of movie

Read a while ago that George Lucas was so concerned whether SW was going to be a success. Had it not succeeded, he strongly considered chopping it up into several parts and making it into a multi - part Saturday TV series.

Would it have worked? Would there be a remake in the 90's, perhaps leading to a reboot today? Who'd play the parts made famous by Ford, Hamill, Fisher, Prowse / Earl Jones, Guinness, Cushing, Baker, Mayhew, Daniels, etc...

Perhaps these could have been the opening titles:

I've never heard that before, but if Clone Wars is any indication, the OT would make an awesome Saturday morning cartoon. :D

Would've mad ea fine show, but it would be nowhere near the cultural phenomenon it is today. Probably would never get ESB or ROTJ due to budget restrictions - while I can see a Boba Fett type character showing up, Yoda might never happen.
