Star Trek in the late 70s/early 80s instead of 60s?

I'm not familiar with that show. It probably did not get far in the American market. I noticed it only had 26 episodes, so its marketing base would have been small.

If you managed to make it in around 1975 or 76, you at least avoid the Star Wars effect, though. How might it play out then? (Would the culture have changed enough for the female Number One character for instance? Maybe they could play up the feminist angle?)

I actually think a Star Trek TOS in 1975 or 1976 would have been a better show for many reasons: the issues of women's rights, race relations and an ongoing war (Vietnam) were no longer relevant. The problem I see though, is not with the content of the series, but the pubic following. TOS accumulated a massive following in part because it had little competition. Shows like U.F.O. (mentioned above) were localized and short lived. The real moon landings and short term nature of 2001 sort of reduced the market for far-off space adventures, leaving Star Trek the standard for comparison for many years.

If TOS actually crosses years with Star Wars, it will also have better effects. But I think the problem might be that sci-fi attention is so divided among other various stories that it would not get the following it would need to grow into the franchises we know today.

But, I could be wrong, and Star Trek's message of an ideal world where technology has solved so many present day problems might keep it as popular as ever. It is a good point for discussion.
