Reading some of the old time lines on this forum it seems most people think that Germany wins after a few years in those time lines where Germany attacks east in 1914 (keeping Belgium neutral)
Is it possible that this could really just lead to some big German epic fail Stalingrad like defeat in the Winter of 1915?????
I am thinking something like:
The germans leave 4th, 5th, 6th and seventh army in the west, and rail 1st, 2nd, 3rd armies to join the 8th.
Seeing the German and Austrian offensive (Austrians like OTL) the Russians just evacuate the Poland bulge, doing scorched earth, conserving ammunition. Before the first Winter the Germans take Riga and Divinsk but are afraid to advance much further because of the looming Winter. Serbia is 'handled' in October - November 1914, with the northern half occupied. So far so good for Germany.
In 1915 the Russians galvanized by the German invasion will make every effort to hold Moscow and Lenningrad the next year, big centers of population and a reasonable industry and well connected to each other by rail.
France and Britain after an intial French rush at Metz fails in 1914 devote their entire effort to crushing Turkey with an attack on the Asian as well as the European side of the Dardenelles. Constantinople falls June 1915.
Massive aid flows through to the southern Russian ports, even a small token BEF for the Ukraine with some air units and even some river monitors for the Dnieper and Bug.
The Germany army plods through Smolensk in 1915 all the way to the suburbs of Moscow and Petrograd (think WWII December 1941 line here, but Russia still holding Kiev and Odessa south. The Austrians were supposed to handle these but they don't really push hard.
In late December 1915 in the snow, A massive Russian attack infiltrates through thinly stretched German lines, Russian cavalry drives deep, German units are cut off, British aircraft strafe the few good roads and bridges. The Austrians just give up en-masse, ultimately several German armies are destroyed.
Italy and Rommania are starting to think about kicking Austria when she is down. so Austria sues for peace. One month later Germany also sues for peace, Kaiser Wilhem abdicates in favor of his son, Germany loses Alsace and Lorraine and her colonies and agrees to a 15 year halt on any new naval construction. Most of Turkey is divided amongst Russia, France and Britain. Austria loses Bosnia and the port of Cattaro (to give Serbia a real sea port) and the Ukrainian parts of her Empire to Russia.
