Stalin not in Charge?

I've been reading up on the Red Revolution in Russia and one interesting part painted a picture for readers that knew Trotsky, yet not enough to recognize the differences between him and Stalin.

So I'm bascially asking what would have happened if Trotsky had taken power instead of Stalin? Could we see a mass destruction of petty producers who at the time (Mid 1920s) composed a greater deal of the Soviet industry? The Trotskyite bloc, so I believe, was heavily locked on doing exactly this and some other things vaguely different.

Though you could say that it would be a mirror image of Stalin's rule, though without the mass purges and Trotsky leading as dictator in disguise of the USSR.

Forgive me if I said anything inherently stupid, I'm just new to the subject.
