I got this idea after after looking at pischinovski's excellent Araldyana map series (colonisation of North America by a Celtic Roman successor state), which featured a large conurbation on Sandy Hook Bay, near OTL Atlantic Highlands, NJ, but nothing important on Manhattan.
So do you think some places are poised to become large cities, no matter whether they are settled by the Portuguese, the English, the Mali Empire or Song China?

Also, just to clarify: by 'New World' I mean every region that had no native city-dwelling civilisation prior to European colonisation (so it includes parts of Africa but excludes most of Central America, frex).
