Sports WI: Magic Johnson never becomes HIV postive

What if Magic Johnson was more careful in his "off-the-court" activities and never got HIV? How would giving Magic a longer career affect the Lakers and the NBA in general?

He was already a bit past-the-peak in the early 1990s, and the Bulls surely overtook the Lakers in terms of quality at that time, but I guess the Lakers could have at least reached the finals once more after 1991. I'm not sure if they could manage to win a ring during Michael Jordan's absence, though. Possibly Magic would have actually ended his career after Barcelona '92, because that would have been one hell of a punchline.

edit: But it would have been interesting to see a longer combination of Magic, Divac and Van Exel!

By 1991 Magic was already starting to have problems with his knees. I think father time would have eventually caught up to Magic and age and nagging injuries would have eventually ended his career. I think he would have retired after the 1993-94 season. Bird was gone by then. Teammates like Kareem, Michael Cooper were also gone and his longtime teammate James Worthy was about to retire. Pat Riley was with the Knicks. Rivals like Isiah Thomas was about to retire and Michael Jordan was off playing baseball at the time.

By 1994 Magic would have also wanted to focus more on business and building his business empire. The Lakers would have been mediocre at this point. Good enough to make the playoffs, but not good enough to go deep into the playoffs and compete for championships. He likely would have been frustrated with basketball by this point. He would have continued being the de-facto head coach of the Lakers during the 92-93 and 93-94 seasons, with Randy Pfund serving as a figure head. He would have been frustrated with his own declining ability and the lack of talent around him. So he likely would have announced his retirement in the summer of 1994.

The NBA landscape doesn't change much. The Bulls still win 2 more championships until Jordan announces his first retirement in 1993. The Rockets still win the championship in 1994.

What would changed is HIV/AIDS awareness, education, and research funding. Arthur Ashe's death would have brought some attention to HIV/AIDS, but it would not have been as shocking as Magic's HIV announcement was. Since Ashe and Ryan White got AIDS through a blood transfusion and not thorough sexual intercourse like Magic contracted HIV. There would have less media attention on HIV/AIDS and thus less safe-sex awareness and education in the 1990s.
