Spiro Agnew vs George McGovern

Now I know what you're thinking, how is this a contest? But think of it this way, Richard Nixon has just been assassinated and Agnew is the acting President of the United States and the presumptive Republican candidate. Will the Republicans change their candidate, will this effect the Democratic nomination process? Or will it come down to Agnew and McGovern? And if it does, who will win?

This would change a lot of things I think. I don't know whether or not McGovern would've still been nominated. It may have come down to Agnew's opposite in 1968, Ed Muskie... Or even Hubert Humphrey. I think if Agnew's President, Muskie probably becomes the nominee.

Also, Agnew is as much a criminal as Nixon was, probably moreso. He was not a cutthroat politician the way Nixon was. Agnew was a buffoon. If the same Ed Muskie from 1968 showed up, he would very well have destroyed him. Muskie had a strong reputation with the public at the time as honest, forthright and genuine. He was also more moderate than McGovern and certainly could be presented as a winnable candidate.

It's hard to imagine a Democrat winning in 1972, but considering it's against Agnew, anything is possible.
