Sparking the Second American Mexican War in 1871

Ok I'm working with an idea, and I want to see how possible it is. A US Cavalry Unit is chasing a Apache Band during the Yavapai War cross to the Mexican American Border.

During the battle with these Apache a Mexican Cavalry Unit who crossed the border by mistake and think they are still in Mexico tell the Americans to leave. These leads to heat words between the Americans and Mexicans before they start shooting each other. By the end of it the Mexicans had killed five Americans and wounded even more. The Mexicans also lost about 15 dead and about the same number wounded. Some of these wounded become prisoners. The Apache use the battle between the Mexicans and Americans to get away.

But would this be enough of a CB for Grant to ask for a DOW against Mexico, or have I when off the deep end?

Was there still feelings of "Manifest Destiny" at this time?

I believe so, people where still hoping to get British Colombia for the Alabama Claims. So they should want some more of Mexico that really is not all that well populated at the time.

I'd say then this story is relatively plausible. Are you going to go for it?

Santa Ana is finished. The problem is that the American Republican majority is allergic to annexing more territory. They even have buyers remorse about buying Alaska from Russia to the point that they would probably be willing to sell Alaska to another power besides Great Britain if another power (maybe Germany or Sweden) expressed an interest in buying it). When it comes to acquiring Canada or Mexico, their first question is, "for whom will they vote", their fear is "Democrats" and their answer is "forget it!"

The shooting of troops could be a final straw, should think there would many small things leading up to a DoW.

Trouble with a DoW is, Grant would have to follow through with a full-scale invasion. Unpopular. More likely would be a 'punitive expedition' to take and burn whatever base the errant Mexicans came from. Honour satisfied. Annexation of any part of northern Mexico is hugely improbable: the terrain varies from scrub that not even a self-respecting Texas longhorn would graze to real deserty-desert.
