Spanish/German-American war?

I was reading about Germany's interest towards the Philippines, and I read that the German Navy was maneuvering in the way of the US Navy and acting aggressively towards Commodore Dewey. They only backed down when threatened with war. Suppose the Germans do not back down, and decide to challenge the US for the Philippines instead. What happens?

I doubt it would come to total war. Even war with Spain took years of build up, I think diplomats could settle things down but it could inspire bad blood between the two powers.

The German Navy backed down when a British ship sailed between them and the Americans with their ship's band playing the star spangled banner if I recall.

And thus was the Anglo-American Alliance of Awesome born. I call it the Quad-A, but most people call it the "Special Relationship" today.

I've read many accounts of the little German-American 'war scare' but never heard of this before...

I read about it in a few different places, the important thing to remember is a Germany at war with the US, after already pissing off the British with the naval race, will have to worry about the UK jumping on their back. Too convienant, too necessary.
