Spanish cortes's election of new king

Can someone explain to me the intricacies of Spain in the 1870's and how they went about deciding who could be their new king? They ultimately decided on Prince Amadeo of Italy and we know how he turned out. On wikipedia it says that the French supported Henri of Orleans as a potential candidate while the Spanish themselves thought of electing Antoine of Orleans, a younger brother of Henri I believe. Does anyone know why the French supported Henri? I would think that as a member of the House of Orleans that they wouldn't like him. Also, since the French supposedly supported Henri, did they also support Antoine? Thanks very much to anyone who can explain this to me.

Napoleon III certainly not supported Orléans candidacy, and they were much focused on refusing an Hohenzollern's candidacy in Spain and having a cautious take on the whole question apart that.
In fact, the emperor clearly stated that, while he wouldn't mind Spaniards electings Antoine d'Orléans, he personally tought he was the worst choice they could make, because of his scheming tendencies and his strong political stances (especially a supposed ie with Prussia). Eventually, he rather favoured Alfonso XII's candidacy as more legitimate and less prone to political turmoil. His opinion was known in Spain, which in addition of Antoine's own shortcomings, weighted in the decision.
Now some french newspapers did supported Antoine, but it was fairly marginal.

So, do you think that Antoine could've been elected had Amadeo been out of the picture for whatever reason? I've been thinking that if Amadeo had been elected to the Greek or Romanian thrones, then Antoine could've been a likely king for Spain.

No, he had too much of a poor reputation, AFAIK. If Amedeo is out, I think Alfonso would have a, very cautious, acceptance by the Cortes.

Really? The Spanish really hated Isabella and were afraid of Alfonso being a puppet of Isabella. I personally can't see them picking Alfonso so soon after getting rid of Isabella.

Without any viable candidate (and Antoine, by his personal misgiving such as his duel with Henry of Bourbon and his poor to absent political or diplomatical support wasn't), Cortes will be forced to choose between Alfonso or the Republic, and the latter isn't really an option at this point (even if it's still more likely than Antoine as king, which is telling.)
Giving that Alfonso is still young, the hope of preserving much of the Provisional Government would be certainly seen as an alternative, compared to any other candidature made IOTL.

Wasn't Antoine relatively popular in Spain though? He supported the overthrowing of Isabella and later married his daughter to king Alfonso XII. Maybe if he hadn't sullied his reputation by the duel he would've had more support?

Let's say that the Provisional Government ordered him to leave Spain immediatly after the Revolution for a reason.

The duel was only one of the many stuff that put down his ambitions. He was seen as overly ambitious and scheming, with few if any international support, and with too strong political views.

Hmm. Okay then. Thanks. I don't suppose you know anything about Henri of Orleans and his potential candidacy?

Giving that the exile was particularily painful for him, I don't see the Duc d'Aumale accepting the crown even if it was proposed to him.
