Spanish commonwealth

Starting no early from 1750, have Spains mainland American colonies turn into like the British commonwealth. Autonomous states with the king of Spain as head of the state. Fight with Spain in their wars and all that stuff

I guess you know already what I mean

I think there was a proposal in OTL in the late 1700's to divide the colonies into kingdoms, with members of the royal family as Kings, and the Spanish King proper becoming Emperor. Get that to succeed, and it's a good start, I'd think.

Doesn't it sound ASB? But I want to find sources on this, I know I've heard of it but I need to confirm this with sources.

I may have misread that, but isn't that a proposal for a Spanish Imperial Federation of some kind?

Yes, basically. It would've esentially fulfilled the goal of a Spanish version of the British Commonwealth. Alas, the idea itself didn't found much support. But well, we can always find the PoD's to make it succeed, instead.

As far as I'm aware the Spanish government discriminated against those born in the colonies, which was one of the reasons they became independent. If Spain gave the colonists representation I can see the Spanish colonial empire surviving much longer, which would be interesting with the USA around. Perhaps the USA and Spain eventually go to war and the Spanish drag in their European allies?
