Spanish "Canada"

Hello,

I am wondering out of all of the Spanish colonies in north America, which would be the most likely to become the Spanish equivalent of Canada. By that I am referring to a place that largely remains loyal and where loyalists from the rest of the Spanish empire flee to once the other countries go indepedent.

Cuba remained fairly loyal, until the late 19th Century. Puerto Rica is another relatively passive location. So, with better administration & colonial policy the the Spanish Carribean?

Indeed, Cuba and Puerto Rico were that in OTL, until the Spanish-American War.

I suppose the next easiest would be other island territories, like Santo Domingo, which could be motivated to a more enduring loyalty to Spain, out of fear of the Haitians.

Or, if the British had not taken the Malvinas/Falklands, Spain might have been able to keep it.

Ah. Forgot about Cuba and Puerto Rico, though admitably I was thinking more of stuff on the mainland of the Americas. :)

Weren't New Spain and La Plata strongly in favour of remaining under Spanish rule for longer than the rest? If Spain plays its cards right, it could hold at least one of these for much longer.

Spanish Cuba would be intriguing if an equivalent Civil War were to happen.

Does the KIng flee to Cuba?

Does the Island fall to the Nationalists?

Do the Loyalists flee there when they lose in Spain proper?

Does Cuba become independent then or does the Civil War expand to the Island?

Does America send Abraham Lincoln Brigades (Plural) to the War? Are the volunteer American Nationalist Brigades to?

La Plata was quite the opposite, it was an area that embraced independence enthusiastically and early.

The Spanish could have sold Luzon to the Americans or British which is what they originally want, then maintain Visayas as the Spanish colony ala East Timor, I think this will work out better but only would work if the Spanish are not bancrupt at that time.

The other scenario would be the Spanish loses Luzon to the Dutch and the Spanish fortify Visayas.

Argentina, I guess, both in terms of overall expansion (Canada to the west, Argentina to the north) and fears of nearby powers (namely Brazil) encroaching on its territory, would be a good pick. Of course, I guess you would need some buildup for Argentina to be the last Spanish colony in the mainland Americas.
