Spain Joins Central Powers

Considering that Spanish Royalty had some Hapsburg blood mixed in, what if Spain joined the Central Powers for Austria-Hungary's sake? Spain would be up against France (both in Europe and in Africa), Portugal, and Britain (Gibraltar).

yeah centuries ago, people forget Spain lost most of its colonies to the US less than 20 years earlier and was still economically reeling from it by the time WWI began. Spain joining the Central powers would me the death of Spain as a state. It would have collapsed into parts. The Spanish civil war in the thirties would be nothing compared to a Spain that within one generation lost all its colonies and massive numbers of dead, wounded and missing. It would look like the collapse of Yugoslavia at its best. At its worse.... the fall of the Western Roman Empire because there is no real modern comparison to what would happen to Spain. I would imagine at least half dead, missing or fled the country and the parts bringing what ever is the final total to a frighteningly small number. Also some of these states will be either some sort of leftist or rightist at the very least, which makes WWII interesting.

As to who they do, the gain Gibraltar and do well initially against the Portuguese, they then get crub stompped by the British, French and possibly Americans if they join at the wrong time. Yes there will be trench warfare in Spain and you might divert enough troops to give Germany a chance to win something or at least stalemate the conflict for decades.

Most of the monarchs involved in WWI were one big happy family, so blood ties mean nothing anymore in the 20th century, this is not Crusader Kings 2. You're gonna have to think of a better reason to involve Spain in WWI - decrepit, weak Spain that could barely beat an insurgency in the Rif a few years after the war. If Spain really wanted to fight, it'd have been better off joining the Entente in hopes of getting a symbolic piece of German Kamerun in return.

Why Spain, which just lose war against USA and it is itself very rare situation, would join to war only because of distant relativeness? If royal blood would mean so much there wouldn't be Great War. But if Spain is so stupid that still join to war, it will lose all territories outside of European Spain and there will be revolution and perhaps civil war.

I could see a distant possibility of Spain joining if Mexico and other Central and South American countries tried to win back against the Americans and Imperial Europeans.

Still very doubtful.

Trade and sell as much as they can and let the other stupid buggers kill each other.

Well, the government had "its position" to lose. Spain was kinda unstable as it was...

Not to mention that given how poorly the Spanish army performed against the Moroccan rebels pitching them against either the Central Powers or the Entente will most likely be even more disastrous.
