Spain Colonizes Vietnam

I seen a thread in which stating Spain had conquered the Vietnamese capitol in the 19th century but gave it to France afterwards and the OP was bemoaning that this was a huge mistake because Vietnam was a huge cash cow and it would have given Spain much needed money during the economic recession it was suffering in the same century.

So I am curious about this scenario.

1)Spain does exactly that in the 19th century

2)Spain attempts another Philippines on Vietnam

Spain conquered Hanoi? Never heard that before.

To be honest, I don't think the Spaniards could have done it, Vietnam was a bloody but to crack.

The franco-spanish expedition of 1858 almost failed. If it hadn't been for the Escadre d'Extrême-Orient it would have been a complete failure with a forced retreat. But let's remember the Vietnamese were relatively well armed and not too badly trained either.
