Soviets establish a Communist state in Iran 1946

Could the Soviet Union turn their occupation zone into a communist regime

Would Southern or Northern Iran try to conquer the other

What would be the impact on the middle east

Truman sends Stalin a picture of Nagasaki and strongly suggests the Soviets go home. Iran is too important to the west's future economic recovery to be allowed to fall to the Soviets.

As I noted at https://www.alternatehistory.com/fo...e-northern-iran-in-1946.428129/#post-15854041 the Soviets did stall on leaving Iran and did attempt to exercise continuing influence there through "autonomous" Azerbaijani and Kurdish republics. They backed off as a result of (1) pressure from the US and (2) concessions from Premier Qavam which ultimately proved to be meaningless. (Some Tudeh members of the Cabinet who were later dismissed, an oil treaty which the Majlis never ratified.)

There's gonna be a proxy war within Iran that's for the sure, perhaps more bloodier than Vietnam and Korea given the importance of oil to both blocs; though at least the West would have a tighter grip on non-Communist South Iran ITTL.
