So I've been reading over a couple threads regarding the Soviet Union extending to the British Channel and possibly portugal shortly after WWII. My question is, so what? As we all know the USSR collapsed in 1990 due to an ass backwards domestic policy that killed scientific progress and economic growth, now many people seem to think that if the USSR had more territory and people under its thumb then the cold war would have gone worse for the US, but I am wondering what if that wasn't the case? Is it possible that having to administer to more territory and more people would bankrupt the USSR earlier than in OTL? It's not like the rest of Europe had more resources than was already available to the Russians, plus they would probably need to maintain an even larger military just to keep the people under their thumb. Not to mention that since the Soviets never had a blue water navy capable of competing with the USN so an invasion of the British Isles seems about as likely as a successful sealion during WWII.

If I'm missing something here let me know, I didn't really research this, these are just educated guesses on my part.

Also I am not denying that this scenario would make the US more fascistic, although I'm not entirely sure that such a thing is a guarantee either.
