That is an...interesting...shield in the middle. It might look better with a border around it, though.

It's not my favorite either- I was actually inspired by someone that lives in The Maritimes, and I thought it looked realistic enough, though not the most aesthetically pleasing.
The Tricolour represents English, Canadian, and French Heritage, while the shield represents (read like a book), English, Scottish, French, Irish, and all other ethnicities that call Acadia home.

Yup! Newfoundland was given to Canada, but the UK kept on to Newfoundland so the UK and US could collaborate more closely on technology.
