alternatehistory.com

Alright, so I'm cribbing this idea straight from a Cracked article, but it intrigued me enough that I thought about asking the Collective Wisdom of alternatehistory.com what they thought of it.

Apparently JFK was this close to convincing Khrushchev that the USSR and the US would benefit from a joint mission to the Moon right before he was assassinated. JFK's veep tried to follow up on it, but Khrushchev simply didn't trust him enough.

So, my question is: what if Kennedy survived the assassination attempt? What if the US and the USSR actually set up a joint mission to the moon?

Would this actually have an effect on international relations? I'm kind of hoping the answer is yes, otherwise this would be the lamest alternate history ever. But imagine if the USSR and the USA started cooperating all the way back in the Kennedy / Khrushchev Era. Vietnam, Reagonomics, the first Gulf War, 9/11 ... Afghanistan, Chernobyl, glasnost ...

What would this alternate timeline look like?
