Now, before I start, if there is a thread like this already then I offer my apologies. When I use the Search option, strangely enough it doesn't seem to work when I type "Soviet Union conquers Japan", though it tends to work when I simply "Soviet Union" or "Japan". Good chance it is a mistake I might have made, but I suppose you'll understand.

Ahem, so, as far as I know I have not seen any thread, no, not even alternative timelines where the Soviet Union effectively conquered, or at least took over the majority of property owned by, Japan. As you are all aware relations between the Soviet Union and Japan weren't exactly what you could call friendly.

As the strain put on relations because both wanted their share of control in North East Asia. Another source was the humiliating defeat caused earlier, if I recall correctly, somewhere around the year 1904.

Now, motivation and cause might be easy to find, but I wish to know if it's plausible for them to conquer it before the American forces nuke the two Japanese cities. Having them conquer lands before the Japanese have the chance to attack Pearl Harbour and thereby draw the U.S.A into the war would be even better, but I think it would be already difficult enough, if not impossible, for them to conquer lands after the U.S.A got involved.

That and the fact that they had an extremely aggressive Nazi Germany to their West didn't make things easier either. So, despite all the challenges, I want to ask you, good people of Alternate History, if it is possible or not.
Without having to resort to ASBs of course.

And, if it were to be done, how would it affect relations between the U.S.A and the U.S.S.R if the Cold War were to preceed in a similar fashion as the one we had? By Ares, perhaps I'd be better asking how the radical the views from a Soviet Union in such a timeline would differ from the views the people today have of the Soviet Union in our timeline.

I'm curious. :D
