Soviet-Japanese Alliance

I have seen this in a number of timelines, and I wonder how possible it is. I know that Japan was anti-communist, but under what circumstances could a Japanese-Soviet alliance come about pre-WWII. The POD would probably have to be in Germany. No Nazi State, and thus not as much expansionism and axis of evil. Or maybe Japan wants to have the northern boundry of Manchuria secure, and proposes an alliance. Is it possible? What would WWII look like?

how bout when the japs invade soth east asia the soviets want a iece of the cake so they strike up a aslliance wit the japs since the japs are already meating stiff gureelia ristance

There would have to exist a condition where Imperial Japan and the Soviet Union would benefit mutually from assisting the other.

Only possibility I can think of is a WW2 scenario where Japan gets off without total conquest and Japan and the Soviets are in each other's pockets against the US in the Cold War.

There were, IIRC when the Molotov-Ribbentropp pact was signed, several calls for an Non-Aggression Pact (which could prelude an alliance) with the Soviets. But they settled for a Neutrality Pact instead.

Or eliminate Sorge, and Stalin might have considered a Non-Aggression pact (at the very least) when Barbarossa is in full swing.
