I assume the trigger is the 1981 imposition of Martial Law; so Soviet Forces would be invited to assist in maintaining stability by Prime Minister Jaruzelski.
Such an action would be seen as an internal Warsaw Pact action so apart from condemnation from the west there would be no action and definitely no intervention.
I've posted an excerpt from a book called
The Threat that actually talks about the attempted Soviet invasion. I remember that me and Blue Max tossed it around for three or four pages, and instead of
Soviet Invasion of Iran, 1981 I almost did
Soviet Invasion of Poland, 1981.
What the big problem was with Soviet forces on the Polish border was when they called up the reservists to make the operation, no one came. It'd be like calling up people in Wisconsin to go invade the Michigan panhandle, or ordering a town to invade it's trailer park.
These people had relations and friends right on the other side of the border, and they weren't going to jeopardize those people just for a the measly cash that would come from putting on a ratty ass uniform again. So they didn't report. The 'desertions' if that's what you want to call it were so large they couldn't punish the regular soldiers as there were too many to jail.
I'm going to try and find that piece on it...I know I've posted it on here before. It's very interesting, especially in how it shows the workings between the Politburo and the military.
