Soviet Bornholm

How would this affect Operation Unthinkable? A possible casus belli?
Stalin clearly had absolutely no qualms ethnic cleansing. Knowing him, he might just deport the Danes and replace them with someone else thinking that this will eventually settle the question. So yes, there would be cause for concern.
Wonder if they'd end up in Estonia next to the much reduced Estonian Swedish population or just straight up be sent to Siberia?

It won’t be a declaration of war, Denmark will simply mine the waterways for defensive reasons.

...mining an international waterway (yup, the danish straits are written down to be exactly that, which has been accepted by just about everyone since 1857) will, completly apart from being pretty damn stupid for denmark itself (mining water within visual range of your own harbours in peace is folly) absolutly be a declaration of war against anyone caring to go thorough there, same as shelling or bombing ships would be. even if some some inane reason you would want to argue it isn't,denmark would be requiered to shoot on soviet minespeewers operatin in international waterways to actually give the exercise a point, which again is a declaration of war in a blindingly obvious way.

It’s only a act of war if USSR starts a war over it. What it is, is a casus belli, USSR could fully legitimate start a war over it, but if USA back Denmark that war is WW3.

First of all it depend on whether Stalin want to deport them, but if does deport it fully depend on the whim of Stalin, they could end up resettles on Ösel, Kaliningrad or Sakhalin depending on how Stalin are feeling that day. Stalin could also set up Bornholm as a SSR or ASSSR, make it “independent” (maybe expanding it with Bornholm/People’s Republic of Denmark getting Rügen and Hinther Pomerania), make it autonomies region of East Germany or Poland or whatever, the sky is the limit for whatever Stalin decides.

sorry, but thats inane. If you repeteadly attack another nation, you have commited to war,the theoretical possibility of it not responding not withstanding.

and yes,if the US "backs" someone declaring war against the Soviet Union, its WW3 time, which is why I already mentioned they would have to be utterly deluded to even contemplate it.

A continued occupation of Bornholm are a act of war against Denmark, but unless Denmark fight it, there’s no war, in the same manner, Denmark mining the Belts and Sounds are only a war, if USSR react on it with military means. It’s not very complex.
