Southern Netherlands alternate names?

Hi! I'm in the midst of beginning a TL where during the War of the Spanish Succession, Austria pummels Bavaria even more than OTL, and during the Peace of Baden, instead of the Wittelsbacher restoration in Bavaria, Austria keeps it, and gives the Wittelsbach family the Spanish Netherlands as a consolation prize.

What would the Wittelsbach territory be called? Spanish/Austrian Netherlands were called such because of their main country, but there is no main territory for the Wittelsbach family except FOR the Spanish Netherlands.

Any ideas?

They tried to IOTL several times, actually. The Netherlands might be a nice prize, but Bavaria is closer, worth more, and allows Austria to effectively dominate Germany.

Thanks for the name! I like it.

Duchy of Brabant.

Though why they'd give that treasure trove to the treacherous Wittelsbachs escapes me.

The United Provinces blockaded Antwerp until 1795, effectively destroying much of the southern Netherlands wealth. In addition, the Austrian Netherlands were far from Austria and difficult to defend from the French, they were consistently overrun during wars with France. In 1764, 1776-77 and 1784-85 the Austrians proposed partitioning the Austrian Netherlands with France and the Wittelsbachs in return for Bavaria.

Basically this. During the 18th century about 50% of the population in Modern Belgium were in poverty. Nobody but France wanted the Netherlands and no one wanted France to have it.

As for a name, Lothier seemed to be the lead title during the Archducal reign in the Southern Netherlands, so I'd say either that or Brabant. Or perhaps the Southern Netherlands would be called Flanders, as most of the Belgian Nobility of the time considered themselves Flemish. Definitely one of the three.
